Commercial & Procurement Lead (BESS)

Department: Finance

Employment Type: Permanent – Full Time

Location: UK – London

Compensation: £80,000 – £100,000 / year

Description

The Lead Procurement and Commercial Manager will oversee BESS procurement activities, supporting ongoing in-life project commercial contract management. This role reports directly to the Head of Procurement & Supply Chain, in a team responsible for £1bn of spend over the next two years, across multiple geographies.

You will help manage Field’s tender processes ensuring we achieve the optimal price without compromising on quality of delivery (to schedule). You will be the key commercial point of contact for our BESS tenders. In the process, you will help negotiate robust contracts (alongside Legal) with suitable commercial structures which protect Field and ensure contractors are appropriately incentivised.

During the execution phase of our projects, you will work closely with suppliers, internal technical teams, and our finance and legal teams to validate variations from the scope, applying the required commercial scrutiny. You will use this experience to refine our approach for future tenders.

It’s an exciting team to join Field. In 2025 we need to sign contracts on 340MW of projects. Beyond that, we have a GW-scale portfolio of developments in GB that can play a critical role in reaching Clean Power by 2030.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Represent Field and Build a Strong Network
    • Act as a decision-maker and key industry contact, with key responsibility for BESS supplier relationships and outreach
    • Regularly attend industry events, organising supplier meetings to stay updated on trends and technological advances
    • Develop methods to track supplier capabilities, enabling well-timed tender processes
  2. Long Term BESS Roadmap & Assessment
    • Work with our Technical team to forecast BESS technology trends, and the impact on supplier selection.
    • Undertake detailed analysis to assess cyber security and critical national infrastructure (CNI) implications of supplier selection
    • Assess other equipment which may be relevant in the construction of BESS projects (e.g. synchronous compensators, co-located solar)
  3. Lead BESS tenders with support from the Head of Procurement & Supply Chain
    • Help define our procurement strategy across multiple capital projects (EPC full wrap, partial wrap, split, etc.)
    • Carry out full construction tenders, issuing RFI/Qs, prequalifying suppliers, and defining clear metrics to assess their commercial submissions
    • Use appropriate levers to negotiate commercially favourable outcomes for Field
    • Work with Legal to refine key contract clauses, such as liquidated damages, warranties, and limitations of liability
    • Work closely with our in-house technical team to onboard new contractors and further refine our project requirements
    • Help ensure contractors proposals are comprehensive and commercially watertight
  4. Support our construction project managers to manage our BESS contracts tightly
    • Work with finance, technical teams, and the Head of Procurement & Supply Chain to evaluate contract variations, extensions of time, and amend the schedule of works and pricing
    • Carry out commercial variation work in accordance with the obligations of our lenders
  5. Support our commercial operations managers in managing our ongoing service contracts
    • Long Term Service Agreement contracts
  6. Continuous improvement and team building
    • Identify weaknesses in our processes and continually strive to improve the way we work
    • Consider innovative ways to improve performance and save money – e.g. rebate schemes, volume incentives, etc.
    • Where necessary, implement new systems/software and roll out to cross-functional teams
    • Assist in finding new talent to grow the team
    • Onboard new members of the construction procurement team and work with them to build best-in-class scalable processes and procedures
