The Operations Technician supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Thorpe Marsh site during their assigned shift. Working under the direction of the Shift Team Leader, ensuring compliance with operational procedures, safety standards, and performance targets, the Operations Technician maintains asset availability, grid compliance, and operational excellence.
Operating Environment
This is an important role within the site operational structure, ensuring that the site operates safely, reliably, and in alignment with commercial and grid requirements. The candidate must be willing to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays, and have the ability to respond to emergency situations on-site. This role reports to the Shift Team Leader.
Principal Accountabilities
- Operations & Monitoring
- Monitor and operate the BESS plant via SCADA and control systems in line with dispatch instructions.
- Carry out routine operational checks, inspections, and system status verification.
- Respond to alarms, faults, and abnormal conditions, escalating where necessary.
- Assist in system start-up, shutdown, and switching operations.
- Maintenance Support
- Perform first-line maintenance activities and basic fault-finding.
- Support planned and unplanned maintenance activities alongside engineering teams.
- Ensure accurate logging of defects and work completed in maintenance systems.
- Assist with isolations and permit-to-work processes as required.
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Comply with all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
- Support safe systems of work, including risk assessments and permit controls.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping across the site.
- Report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly.
- Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain accurate operational logs and shift records.
- Provide clear and concise handovers to incoming shifts.
- Support data collection for performance monitoring and reporting.
- Team Support
- Work collaboratively with the Shift Team Leader and wider operations team.
- Participate in shift briefings, toolbox talks, and training activities.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture and continuous improvement initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

- Ability to make decisions under pressure and manage incidents effectively.

- Knowledge of grid services and energy markets.
Qualifications & Experience
- Essential
- Relevant technical qualification (e.g. electrical engineering, HNC/HND or equivalent).
- Experience in power generation, energy storage, utilities, or similar industrial environment.
- Authorised Person / Senior Authorised Person (AP/SAP) status.
- Desirable
- Experience working with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
