About this Role

We are looking for an experienced Competition Economist to join our Research team. This role will work closely with our senior team to manage small teams of competition economists conducting preliminary research into new case ideas and new theories of harm.

Our Research team is responsible for conducting early-stage economic analysis of potential anticompetitive conduct. Our ability to support law firms globally in the crucial case development phase differentiates Fideres from all other economic consultancies.

Our pro-active approach to identifying and assessing the economic effects of conduct in markets across the economy using the information available makes this role attractive to those seeking a purpose driven role mixing strong analytical skills with creativity.

Key Accountabilities

In this role you will manage a portfolio of competition economics research projects. As an experienced, commercial and relationship driven Competition Economist, you will collaborate with project teams to brainstorm novel solutions to the economic problems in front of you.

Some notable responsibilities:

  • Work closely with our leadership team to develop and manage a robust pipeline of commercial research ideas
  • Lead a research team to ensure those innovative ideas are researched and delivered, including assessing theories of harm, market definition and developing preliminary damages models
  • Manage the robust economic analysis of antitrust allegations as part of the delivery of the research pipeline, ensure full quality control
  • Writing and managing the production of comprehensive and concise reports that summarise the key findings of our analysis and research
  • Writing and developing a pipeline of periodic blogs and articles exploring new and developing competition economic themes, write articles for publication on behalf of Fideres in the press
  • Assess the quality of pitching material produced by the team, keeping the client in mind
  • Presenting and explaining proposals to potential clients in a manner that allows them to understand both the results and how they impact their own clients

Key Skills and Attributes

The successful candidate will have:

  • Proven experience at a competition agency, in a sector regulator, or in an economic consultancy in an equivalent role
  • MSc in Economics or the equivalent qualification. A PhD would be highly desirable but is not essential
  • Passion for competition policy, and a strong desire to address corporate misconduct and correct market distortions
  • Knowledge of key competition economics topics
  • A passion for economic research
  • The ability to write insightful reports and articles, in particular the ability to express (verbal and written) complex issues in simple terms, understandable by non-specialists
  • Strong analytical skills, able to get to the core issue of complex problems
  • Competence in R required. Some knowledge of Python is preferred
  • Integrity, and a creative, curious mind
  • Lots of initiative and consistently looking to improve processes
  • Responsive to client needs and able to deliver solutions that meet those needs
  • Focused on delivery and committed to seeing projects through to their close
