The Team
Fidelity Investments has long been a leader in managing equity portfolios, with roots dating back to the 1940s. Fidelity’s Equity division is responsible for managing diversified and industry-specific funds for millions of investors. The division consists of portfolio managers, research analysts, research associates, sector specialists and traders who work together to deliver exceptional investment outcomes. Over the years, its capabilities have grown substantially, with investment strategies designed across style, capitalisation, sector, and geography. The Equity team relies on its proprietary research, disciplined portfolio management, and sophisticated trading process to evaluate, construct, and manage investment portfolios and deliver superior long‑term results.
The Role
The Equity Research Analyst will work closely with Fidelity’s portfolio managers and play a vital role in contributing to the investment performance of the firm. The analyst will be assigned a group of stocks within a specific industry to analyse. This analysis involves interviewing company management, communicating with external research sources, assessing customers, suppliers and competitors, compiling detailed financial models and projections, and applying economic and industry analysis to produce an investment recommendation. Equity Research Analysts have full responsibility for coverage of the assigned companies, and stock recommendations are solely attributed to them.
The Value You Deliver
You will be responsible for both identifying new opportunities and monitoring existing positions across your assigned sub‑sector(s). You will work closely with portfolio managers and other analysts on the domestic and international teams and play a vital role in contributing to investment performance. Specific responsibilities include:
- Generating and validating new ideas within your sub‑sector area(s) that are consistent with the team’s investment process. Specifically, idea generation involves:
- Investigating stocks generated by the proprietary ranking process to identify potential to meet a fund’s key criteria of attractive valuation and future positive change. This process typically involves an initial review and, for those stocks that continue to meet the fund’s criteria, more extensive fundamental analysis.
- Identifying stocks through your own process of monitoring opportunities in your sub‑sector area(s), for example, by using screens, Fidelity research and sell‑side research.
- Maintaining coverage of assigned sector stocks held in the required portfolios. Specifically, coverage involves:
- Performing industry analysis – monitoring trends and developing a view regarding the relative attractiveness of the assigned sub‑sectors.
- Maintaining up‑to‑date recommendations and target prices.
- Creating and maintaining proprietary financial models and valuation analysis.
- Monitoring investment theses to track the progress of improving dynamics and other critical variables.
- Conducting proprietary research.
- Collaborating with other Fidelity analysts.
- Engaging with company management through meetings and calls.
- Communicating updates and recommendations to the Equity team and broader Fidelity investment organisation. The most important form of communication will be in‑person discussions, supplemented by concise written reports, voicemails and emails as needed.
The Expertise and Skills You Bring
You will possess the following characteristics:
- A minimum of 3–7 years’ buy‑side investment research experience.
- Bachelor’s degree required, with a postgraduate degree or CFA (or progress towards) preferred.
- Strong analytical and communication skills, coupled with the highest level of personal and professional integrity.
- Demonstrated success during academic studies and in other pursuits.
- Sound business judgement and a strong interest in financial markets.
- A desire to gain an edge and a healthy level of scepticism in your thinking.
- Ability to think creatively, work independently and make decisions quickly, often with limited information.
- Confidence and maturity to engage with senior‑level company management.
- Intellectual curiosity about companies and markets, with high levels of initiative and motivation.
- A strong enthusiasm for identifying new investment opportunities and genuine intellectual curiosity.
- The ability to consistently develop, clearly articulate and effectively communicate investment recommendations, supported by a comprehensive and thoughtful research process.
