This is a difficult role to hire for. That’s exactly why it’s interesting.

Our client is a private equity–backed, FCA-regulated financial services group that has grown rapidly through acquisition. Until now, tax has been managed in a fragmented way across finance. They now want one person to take clear ownership.

The reality of the role requires breadth. You will be responsible for both:

  • Direct tax (corporation tax compliance, provisions, adviser management)
  • Indirect tax (UK VAT, partial exemption, change impacts)

In larger financial services businesses, these sit in separate teams. As a result, this role will suit someone who has developed end-to-end tax exposure, typically within a small to mid-sized financial services business or a hands-on in-house environment.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Acting as the sole in-house tax lead across the group
  • Managing external advisers across CT and VAT
  • Improving tax processes, controls, and documentation
  • Supporting acquisitions, integrations, and structural change
  • Advising senior finance stakeholders on tax risk and planning

This is not a maintenance role. You are expected to shape how tax works.

What they are looking for:

  • ACA / CTA (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrable experience across both direct and indirect tax
  • Financial services exposure (wealth management, asset management, lending, insurance, or broader FS)
  • Comfortable operating with limited tax infrastructure

If your background is highly specialised in only one tax stream, this role is unlikely to be the right fit.

Salary context (important):

The budget is £75,000–£85,000. We are transparent that the market rate for someone with full CT and VAT capability can be higher. What this role offers instead is:

  • Entry into a PE-backed financial services platform
  • Ownership and visibility rarely available at this level
  • A track-record-building role that strengthens future career options

For the right person, this is a career-accelerating opportunity, not just a pay move.

Why consider it?

Breaking into PE-backed financial services businesses is not straightforward. Once you do, the optionality tends to increase quickly. If you enjoy ownership, variety, and seeing tangible commercial impact from your work, this role offers exactly that.
