Purpose of the role
To provide high-quality actuarial pricing insight to support underwriting of structured, multi-line and portfolio insurance solutions. The role focuses on rigorous deal-level pricing, portfolio impact assessment and ongoing performance monitoring, ensuring underwriting decisions are supported by robust analytics and aligned with overall portfolio profitability. Contribute and lead on certain aspects of the pricing transformation program to ensure raters, data enrichment, MI and insights are best in class.
Key responsibilities
- Actuarial pricing & deal evaluation
- Provide actuarial pricing analysis for new and renewal portfolio and structured deals, including delegated and follow-line business.
- Assess expected profitability, volatility and capital impact of individual transactions and their interaction with the existing portfolio.
- Provide clear, evidence-based pricing recommendations covering: Risk selection, Contract structure, Coverage terms, Pricing adequacy.
- Portfolio monitoring & performance analysis
- Develop and maintain monitoring and tracking processes to assess: Segment-level and portfolio-level profitability, Emerging trends and experience divergence, Rate adequacy and market movements.
- Support periodic portfolio reviews, producing objective, data-driven conclusions and recommendations for underwriting or strategic action.
- Evaluate the impact of market conditions, rate change and underwriting behaviour on portfolio performance.
- Actuarial control cycle & business planning
- Maintain strong feedback loops between Pricing, Reserving, Capital modelling, Business planning.
- Input into business planning processes, including: Loss ratio selections, Portfolio assumptions, Assessment of reinsurance structures and recoverability, where appropriate.
- Support exposure management by analysing accumulation, diversification and systemic risk drivers.
- Business partnering & communication
- Work closely with EPS underwriters to: Understand deal intent and risk drivers, Translate actuarial outputs into practical underwriting insight, Communicate complex technical findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate with data, systems and analytics teams to enhance Pricing tools, Data quality and Analytical output and automation.
- Participate in broker and client meetings.
- Identify opportunities to influence pricing strategy by utilizing portfolio datasets into rater benchmarking and segmentation analysis.
Skills & experience
- Required
- Fellow of a recognised actuarial body (or equivalent experience with strong exam progression).
- Strong background in general insurance pricing, ideally within the London Market.
- Proven experience delivering hands-on actuarial pricing analysis for complex or non-standard risks.
- Excellent technical skills, including experience with Pricing models, Portfolio analysis, Large or complex datasets.
- Strong analytical judgement and ability to operate in low-precedent environments.
- Clear and confident communicator, able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to build strong working relationships with peers, management and different business functions.
- Proficient in Excel, VBA, SQL (with either R or Python skills desirable) and an ability to create pricing tools to support day to day underwriting workflow.
- Ability to work under own initiative and show flexibility to meet business needs.
Preferred
- Experience with: Portfolio or follow-line capacity arrangements, Structured or multi-line insurance solutions, Delegated authority / MGA business, Familiarity with exposure management and aggregation risk concepts.
- Experience contributing to pricing system or model development initiatives.
