Rebellion is currently seeking a visionary Lead UI Artist to spearhead the interface and user experience design for a suite of exciting, unannounced AAA titles. This is a leadership role designed for a creative professional who understands that UI is the vital bridge between a player’s intent and the game’s world. You will lead a multidisciplinary team of UI artists, technical designers, and UX specialists in a collaborative, riverside environment in the heart of Oxford.
The Mission: Defining the Player Journey
At Rebellion, we believe that User Interface is never “solved” by a single perspective. It is a harmonious blend of data-driven psychology, artistic flair, and technical implementation. As the Lead UI Artist, you will be the guardian of this harmony. You will join a multidisciplinary leadership team to shape the aesthetic vision and functional implementation of the UI for our upcoming projects.
Key Responsibilities as Lead UI Artist
- Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Team Spearhead: Lead and inspire a team of UI artists and designers, driving the delivery and quality of UI/UX across the entire project lifecycle.
- UX Strategy: Build and execute a comprehensive UX strategy for brand-new games, collaborating closely with the Game Design team to ensure the player journey is seamless and rewarding.
- Documentation: Take full ownership of UI design documentation, defining visual styles, usability goals, and the overarching “feel” of the player experience.
- Performance & Mentorship
- People Management: Proactively manage team performance through regular 1-to-1s, constructive feedback loops, and formal performance reviews.
- Skill Development: Mentor junior and mid-level artists, helping them grow their technical skills and artistic sensibilities within the UI/UX field.
- Collaborative Culture: Foster an environment where team members feel empowered to share diverse points of view, ensuring that the best ideas always rise to the surface.
- Creative & Technical Oversight
- Quality Control: Guide the creation of high-fidelity UI assets, ensuring they meet the Art Director’s vision while strictly adhering to the technical constraints of our proprietary engine.
- Iterative Design: Use data and user behaviour feedback to analyse and react to player friction points, iterating on UX designs until they are world-class.
- Cross-Functional Workflow: Collaborate with programmers, environment artists, and VFX teams to evolve pipelines and long‑term UI/UX goals.
Technical Requirements & Qualifications for Lead UI Artist
Rebellion is looking for a veteran who is as comfortable discussing colour theory and iconography as they are discussing heatmaps and user flow diagrams.
- Core Essentials:
- Proven Track Record: Extensive experience in designing UX/UI for video games, with at least one shipped title in a senior or lead capacity.
- Management Experience: Demonstrated ability to manage a small-to-medium team through all phases of the project lifecycle, from pre-production to launch and beyond.
- Expert Portfolio: A professional portfolio showcasing high‑fidelity UI designs created with industry‑standard tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Illustrator, or Sketch. We want to see your process, not just the final result.
- Communication Mastery: The ability to build trusting, long‑term relationships with cross‑functional stakeholders and articulate complex design concepts to non‑designers.
- Passion for Games: A deep, genuine interest in game development and the latest trends in interactive interface design.
- Desirable Pluses:
- Technical UI Skills: Familiarity with implementing UI within game engines (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity, or proprietary systems).
- Motion Graphics: Experience with motion design or animation for UI elements (transitions, feedback loops, etc.).
- Data Analysis: Experience using player telemetry or A/B testing data to inform design decisions.
Benefits
- Generous Annual Leave: 22 days holiday plus a dedicated Christmas closure (typically 4 days) and all UK Bank Holidays. This leave increases annually after 5 years of service.
- Healthcare & Protection: Private Medical Insurance, a healthcare cash plan (covering dental and vision), life assurance, and critical illness cover.
- Financial Wellness: Enhanced pension scheme, interest‑free and tax‑free loans, and income protection.
- Family & Wellbeing: Enhanced family leave and access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for mental health and wellbeing support.
- The Perks: A wide range of studio discounts, free hot drinks, an on‑site tuck shop, and regular social events that foster our friendly, “big indie” atmosphere.
