An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a skilled Character Artist to join the creative force at Blazing Griffin. This role is centered on developing a brand-new, original IP, offering a unique chance to shape the visual identity of a fresh gaming universe from the ground up.

Job Overview:

  • Company Name: Blazing Griffin
  • Position: Character Artist
  • Job Type: Full-Time / Permanent
  • Location: Glasgow, Scotland (Remote Options Available)
  • Salary: Competitive (Based on experience & industry standards)
  • Software Focus: ZBrush, Substance Painter, Unity
  • Experience Level: Mid-to-Senior (3+ Years)

Detailed Role Responsibilities:

As a Character Artist at Blazing Griffin, you are more than just a technical executor; you are a visual storyteller and a mentor. Your daily workflow will involve high-level collaboration across multiple departments to ensure characters are not only beautiful but functional within the game environment.

Artistic Execution & Pipeline Management:

Under the guidance of the Art Director, you will translate 2D concepts into high-fidelity 3D assets. This involves mastering the sculpt-to-engine pipeline, ensuring that every wrinkle, texture, and silhouette choice aligns with the project’s unique art style. You will utilize industry-standard tools like ZBrush for high-poly sculpting and Substance Painter for PBR texturing.

Technical Integration & Unity Optimization:

A significant portion of this role involves moving beyond the “sculpt.” You will be responsible for setting up and testing your completed characters within the Unity engine. This includes refining materials, adjusting LODs (Level of Detail), and ensuring that the character maintains its visual integrity under various lighting conditions and animations.

Blazing Griffin prides itself on a supportive and collaborative culture. You will take an active role in mentoring junior artists, providing constructive feedback on their topology, UV layouts, and texturing techniques. By sharing your expertise, you help elevate the entire team’s craft.

Pre-Production Collaboration:

Efficiency is key in modern game development. You will work closely with Concept Artists at the earliest stages of production. By providing feedback on character silhouettes and technical feasibility before the modeling phase begins, you prevent bottlenecks and ensure a smooth production cycle.

Workflow Documentation:

As the project evolves, so do the tools. You will be tasked with documenting the specific workflows and “best practices” developed during the creation of this new IP. This ensures consistency across the character team and serves as a vital resource for future hires and technical updates.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

We are seeking a candidate who balances artistic flair with technical rigor. To be successful in this role, you should possess:

  • Industry Experience: A minimum of 3 years in professional game development. Ideally, you have contributed to several shipped titles, demonstrating an understanding of the full development lifecycle from pre-production to gold.
  • Stylistic Versatility: While technical skill is a given, we are looking for someone comfortable working across various aesthetics, with a particular emphasis on stylized character work.
  • Foundational Art Principles: An expert-level understanding of silhouette, color theory, and detail balance. You should know when to push the detail and when to let the viewer’s eye rest.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Knowledge: You must be familiar with the needs of adjacent departments. This includes understanding how your topology affects Technical Animation, how your textures interact with Game Design lighting, and how to interpret the vision of Concept Art.
  • Modern Pipeline Proficiency: Staying current is essential. You should be well-versed in modern retopology techniques, baking processes, and the latest features in PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflows.

Blazing Griffin is committed to fostering a healthy work-life balance and providing a supportive environment for its employees.

  • Generous Leave Policy: 33 days of annual leave per year, ensuring you have ample time to recharge.
  • Health & Wellness: Access to an Employee Assistance Programme through Health Assured and a free Yoga membership at Reset Yoga (Glasgow).
  • Family & Personal Support: Enhanced Parental Leave and Pay, alongside extra allowances for medical appointments, dependents, and compassionate leave.
  • Commuting & Eye Care: A Bike to Work scheme for eco-friendly commuting and eye care contributions for those long hours at the workstation.
  • Financial Security: A robust company pension scheme to help you plan for the future.
  • Flexibility: While we have a beautiful base in Glasgow, we offer flexible working arrangements to accommodate different lifestyles and needs.

Based in the heart of Glasgow, Blazing Griffin is a multi-award-winning studio known for its diverse work across games, film, and post-production.
