The Role: 2D Artist / Compositor

As a Compositor (2D Artist) at Black Kite Studios, you are responsible for delivering creative excellence from the initial pitch through to the final delivery. You will work across a range of high-profile VFX projects, primarily focused on high-end commercials, though our slate often expands into TV and Film.

Key Responsibilities as Compositor (2D Artist)

1. Creative & Technical Execution

  • Seamless Integration: You will be responsible for the final “glue” of a shot, seamlessly integrating live-action plates with computer-generated (CG) elements, digital matte paintings, and FX layers.

  • Look Development: You will work closely with VFX Supervisors to establish the visual “look” of a sequence, driving both the creative and technical approach for specific shots.

  • Advanced Techniques: Your daily workflow will involve high-level 2D tracking, complex matte extraction (keying), layering, and precise color grading to ensure every element belongs in the same world.

2. Collaborative Production

  • Stakeholder Communication: You will collaborate and proactively communicate with the wider VFX team, including Producers and CG Leads, to ensure we deliver creative excellence on time and on budget.

  • Feedback Implementation: You will interpret creative direction from clients and supervisors, translating their vision into polished, cinematic reality.

  • Pipeline Contribution: We encourage artists to help refine our workflows. If you have a better way to solve a technical challenge, we want to hear it.

Required Qualifications & Skills for Compositor

Black Kite Studios is looking for artists who have a passion for the craft and a portfolio that proves it.

  • Proven Track Record: You have a history of delivering outstanding VFX work, specifically within the fast-paced world of Commercials, High-end TV, or Film.

  • Software Mastery: You possess a strong working knowledge of Nuke or Autodesk Flame. Familiarity with other industry-standard software and plugins is a major advantage.

  • The “Artist’s Eye”: You have a great eye for composition, light, color, and photographic reality. You understand how lenses behave and how light interacts with different surfaces.

  • Problem-Solving Attitude: You don’t just identify issues; you solve them. You are a team player who can navigate a fast-moving production environment with a positive, solutions-oriented mindset.

  • Pipeline Knowledge You have a strong understanding of the end-to-end VFX pipeline, knowing how your work affects downstream departments and how to best prepare for CG integration.
