Environment & Sustainability Manager
About the Role
Ferrovial Construction is seeking an experienced Environment & Sustainability Manager to support the delivery of major infrastructure and asset renewal works across Heathrow Airport.
The role will be site based and will provide environmental, carbon and sustainability leadership across a varied programme of works within Heathrow’s operational boundary, including airside and landside infrastructure, roads, drainage, car parks, utilities, buildings and associated civil engineering activities.
The Environment & Sustainability Manager will lead the implementation of environmental management systems, sustainability requirements and carbon reduction processes in line with Ferrovial Construction procedures, Heathrow Airport Limited Employer’s Requirements, ISO 14001, ISO 50001 and PAS 2080.
The role will work closely with project managers, construction teams, designers, procurement, supply chain partners and Heathrow stakeholders to ensure environmental and sustainability requirements are embedded from design through to construction, commissioning and handover.
Heathrow Project Scope
The role will support Heathrow capital works and asset renewal projects delivered under the H7 Framework.
These works may include airside and landside pavements, road renewal, drainage upgrades, car park optimisation, utilities, fire mains, pollution control infrastructure, terminal and stand refurbishment, MEP works, service subways, perimeter assets and associated temporary works.
Projects will require close coordination with Heathrow Airport Limited and compliance with Heathrow’s carbon, environment and sustainability standards, including requirements relating to responsible procurement, waste minimisation, energy management, low-carbon materials, biodiversity, environmental permits, licences and consents, pollution prevention and carbon reporting.
- Key Accountabilities
- Lead environmental and sustainability management across Heathrow projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements, Ferrovial Construction procedures, Heathrow Employer’s Requirements and applicable UK legislation.
- Develop, maintain and implement Environmental Management Plans, Site Waste Management Plans, Carbon Management requirements, Energy Management arrangements, Biodiversity Management Plans and associated project documentation.
- Support the delivery of Heathrow’s Connecting People and Planet strategy by embedding carbon reduction, resource efficiency, responsible procurement, biodiversity enhancement and environmental protection into design and construction activities.
- Provide leadership, advice and technical support to project managers, construction teams, designers, engineers, procurement teams and subcontractors on environmental, carbon and sustainability matters.
- Ensure environmental controls are incorporated into work planning, method statements, risk assessments, permits and site briefings before works commence.
- Manage environmental permits, licences, consents and approvals, coordinating with Heathrow, regulators, statutory bodies and specialist consultants where required.
- Lead and support environmental inspections, audits, assurance visits and compliance reviews, ensuring findings are communicated, actions are closed and lessons learned are embedded.
- Monitor project performance against environmental and sustainability KPIs, including waste diversion, carbon emissions, material use, energy consumption, fuel use, water management, biodiversity and supply chain performance.
- Lead reporting to Heathrow and internal senior management, ensuring accurate and timely submission of environmental, carbon and sustainability data through relevant systems and trackers.
- Identify and implement carbon reduction opportunities in line with PAS 2080, including the application of the carbon reduction hierarchy and collaboration with designers and supply chain partners.
- Promote the use of low-carbon materials, circular economy principles, waste prevention, reuse and recycling across the project lifecycle.
- Support sustainable procurement by ensuring subcontractors understand and comply with environmental, carbon, energy and sustainability obligations.
- Investigate environmental incidents, near misses and non-conformances, ensuring evidence is gathered, root causes are identified and corrective actions are completed.
- Promote a positive environmental culture across site teams through briefings, toolbox talks, awareness campaigns, training and visible leadership.
- Act as a mentor and technical lead for the Environment & Sustainability Team
- Drive innovation, best practice and continuous improvement across Heathrow projects, capturing achievements, lessons learned and case studies where appropriate.
Skills and Experience
- Proven experience in an environmental and sustainability management role within construction, infrastructure or major project delivery.
- Strong working knowledge of UK environmental legislation, environmental management systems and construction environmental controls.
- Experience implementing ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 requirements within a project or operational environment.
- Knowledge of PAS 2080, carbon management, carbon reporting and low-carbon design and construction principles.
- Experience preparing and reviewing environmental and sustainability documentation, including EMPs, SWMPs, carbon reports, sustainability briefs, risk registers and environmental procedures.
- Strong understanding of waste management, resource efficiency, circular economy, pollution prevention, water management, energy management, biodiversity and environmental permitting.
- Confident communicator with the ability to influence site teams, senior managers, designers, clients, regulators and supply chain partners.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and drive performance across multiple work packages.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of how environmental and sustainability performance supports safe, efficient and responsible project delivery.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications and environmental reporting systems such as Smart Waste, Once Click LCA, inspection trackers or similar digital platforms.
Qualifications
-Degree or equivalent qualification in environmental management, sustainability, engineering, construction, planning, ecology or a related discipline.
-Membership of CIWEM, CIWM, CIEEM, ISEP or another relevant professional body is desirable.
