The Ferrovial BAM Joint Venture has a successful history of delivering critical infrastructure projects for the UK on time and to budget together in a joint venture partnership. The JV is now delivering the track infrastructure across the entire HS2 route. We are seeking a highly experienced and forward‑thinking Chief / Principal Engineering Surveyor to lead the engineering surveying strategy and delivery across all HS2 Track Systems works. This is a senior, high‑impact role that spans all three project Lots, with responsibility for technical leadership, assurance, innovation, and stakeholder collaboration on one of the UK’s biggest infrastructure programmes.
You will oversee and direct survey operations from project initiation through to final handover, ensuring technical excellence, compliance, and digital innovation throughout. This is a unique opportunity to help shape national surveying practices, drive the adoption of advanced digital construction methods, and mentor the next generation of survey professionals in a high‑profile, industry‑defining environment.
Key Responsibilities- Strategic Leadership: Define and implement the Survey Management Plan for the HS2 Track Systems contract. Lead all survey‑related design, planning and operational activities, including: Development, Implementation and Management of Survey Control Network, Management of information and as‑built verification (TESB – Topographical Engineering Survey Baseline), Setting out for civils and permanent way (P‑Way), Reality Capture, Monitoring, GIS integration, Final survey handover deliverables. Align survey activities with wider project strategies in engineering, commercial, and digital delivery.
- Technical Oversight & Assurance: Lead technical assurance and quality control across all survey operations. Ensure full compliance with HS2 technical standards, client specifications, and industry best practices. Plan and coordinate survey works across all Lots, managing key interfaces to ensure programme delivery.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the primary technical interface for Ferrovial BAM Rail Systems (FBRS) with HS2 Ltd, design teams, JV partners, local authorities, and other stakeholders. Provide expert technical advice, insight on risk, and accurate reporting to internal leadership and external partners.
- Innovation & Development: Drive innovation in digital construction, automation, survey technologies, and track system methodologies. Champion lean surveying principles and integrated data workflows across the full project lifecycle.
- Operational Leadership: Guide and support site engineering teams with control, monitoring, setting out, and verification activities. Ensure the timely, cost‑effective delivery of high‑quality survey outputs to support both design and construction.
- Professional Development & Industry Engagement: Mentor teams in surveying, site engineering and digital workflows across the programme. Promote professional accreditation (e.g. CICES, RICS) and lead training, development, and sponsorship initiatives. Represent the organisation at industry events, conferences, and technical forums to promote knowledge‑sharing and best practice.
- Essential Experience: Extensive senior‑level experience in engineering surveying on major civil infrastructure programmes including design of Survey Control Network. Experience in delivering high‑speed rail or slab track works. Leadership experience within a Tier 1 contractor or major JV.
- Qualifications: Member (ideally Fellow) of CICES, RICS or equivalent recognised professional body. Degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Key Skills: Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities with excellent stakeholder engagement skills. Clear and confident communicator able to represent surveying interests at all levels. Advanced knowledge of engineering surveying practices, digital workflows and relevant technical standards.
- Knowledge: Desirable – deep understanding of HS2 technical requirements, Network Rail standards and UK rail infrastructure regulations. Awareness of the commercial, legal and technological factors influencing major infrastructure delivery.
