Role Purpose: To identify, develop, and secure new business opportunities while providing accurate and competitive cost estimates for projects. This role combines commercial acumen with technical expertise to support strategic growth and ensure profitable delivery of bids and proposals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead business development activities across target markets, including shipbuilding, marine engineering, and renewables.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and pricing models for tenders, proposals, and bids.
  • Collaborate with engineering, design, and production teams to ensure estimates reflect technical feasibility and operational capability.
  • Analyse market trends, competitor activity, and customer needs to inform strategic planning.
  • Support bid/no-bid decisions and contribute to contract negotiations.
  • Maintain CRM systems and reporting tools to track pipeline and performance.
  • Represent the company at industry events, trade shows, and client meetings.

Bid Support:

  • Translate aspects of the statement of customer requirements into a cost estimate.
  • Liaise and co-ordinate company departments e.g. engineering, operations, finance, commercial and procurement departments in the compilation of estimates and bid packages.
  • Develop standard costs for the use of operational assets and resources.
  • Participate in site visits to assess/define customer requirements.
  • Ensure that customers' contractual requirements, terms and conditions and standards are taken into account as appropriate in the preparation of estimates and bid packages.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of norms and estimating conventions to improve estimate response times.
  • Develop bid submissions in line with requirements including commercial, contractual, SHEQ, build strategy, scheduling etc. in conjunction with the relevant internal department.
  • Liaise with the Planning team in the creation of build strategy and resourced programme in line with the estimate.

Project Support:

  • Assist with the project management of awarded projects and be fully conversant with the tender submission.
  • Assist with the development of the strategy, project and operational/tactical plans to execute the project.
  • Provide support to project management in relation to the development of estimates for Variation Orders.
  • Assist with the management of the Change Control Process and negotiate with the customer any changes to the contract, to develop estimates for variation orders.

Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience in business development and estimating within a technical or engineering environment.
  • Strong understanding of shipbuilding, fabrication, or marine systems (preferred).
  • Excellent analytical, commercial, and negotiation skills.
  • Proficient in estimating software, Excel, and CRM platforms.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.

Qualifications:

  • Degree/HND in Engineering, Naval Architecture, Business, or related field.
  • Project management or commercial qualifications (desirable).
