We have an exciting and rare opportunity for a Veterinary Surgeon to join the Equine Medication Control and Anti-Doping team. This is a challenging regulatory and administrative role, working within the wider Equine Regulation, Safety and Welfare team, and closely with our Integrity department. This role will provide the central point of administration within the BHA Medication Control and Anti-Doping Department, and you will assist the senior veterinary team to ensure a comprehensive testing and monitoring programme is maintained, which is of paramount importance to safeguarding the integrity of British horseracing and the welfare of its equine and human participants.
The role is primarily office based but is flexible and can include some race day attendance and out of competition testing.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Management of international runner and re-instatement to racing testing processes
- Results management and monitoring of screening findings
- Medication Control and Anti-Doping department enquiries and administration
- Preparing drug briefs
Longer term projects will include developing and delivering anti-doping education programmes that are specifically tailored for owners, trainers, vets and jockeys.
The successful candidate should hold a veterinary degree, although an equivalent qualification relevant to the job role will be considered. Ideally you will have experience of horseracing and its regulation, or in the regulation of other sports, however we also urge anyone with a keen interest in this area, and a strong desire to learn, to apply.
Essential skills include proficiency in MS Office Packages and the capability to manage electronic databases, as well as the ability to work to deadlines and coordinate effective processes and procedures to ensure the smooth running of the department. You will have meticulous attention to detail and a proactive and flexible approach. Applicants should have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills allied with proven ability to show a high level of discretion as you will be working with confidential information. You will be required to work independently to an agreed purpose for timely and accurate delivery of tasks, and ideally the ability to design, manage and/or deliver education and training to racing’s participants.
