Main Function of the role: To undertake research, generate investment ideas, and, working with the Lead Portfolio Manager, manage their portion of the Federated Hermes London’s Global Small and Mid Cap strategies. Ideas originated should be in line with the stated investment process of the team and come from coverage of the Europe ex UK (including Eastern Europe) region. In addition, ideas for the Global SMID Engagement Equity strategy should, as well as being attractive from a purely investment perspective, have potential to create shareholder value via the team engaging with management to improve companies’ environmental and/or social characteristics. The role requires periodic overseas travel.
Key task and responsibilities:
- Research on companies: company meetings and visits; meeting with sell-side sector analysts and attending conferences; production of detailed investment appraisal and valuation models (DCF or otherwise); working with in-team engagers to assess impact potential and develop and execute an engagement plan; ongoing investment monitoring and research.
- Participate in peer review meetings to evaluate the investment appraisals of other team members, and in portfolio and risk management activity with the Lead PM and team.
- Contribute to the ongoing evolution of the investment philosophy and process of the team and to deciding the format and content of marketing material for the strategy.
- Involvement in the internal and external marketing of the strategies managed by the team, and in developing and maintaining relationships with clients of the strategies. This will include working with the RFP team on proposals and involvement in due diligence assessments by potential clients and/or their advisers.
- Input or authorisation of trades to manage inflows or outflows. Liaison as necessary with dealers in relation to best execution of trades.
- Ad-hoc analysis in relation to, inter alia, investment themes, economics and strategy, portfolio exposures and risk on behalf of team.
- Familiarity with current developments in responsible and impact investing.
- Build relationships where relevant with other investment teams (including US-based teams) and with Federated Hermes Equity Ownership Services (EOS) professionals (on ESG issues).
Experience Required: The requirements of the position include: Excellent academic qualifications, honour’s degree level required and ideally the CFA. Able to engage credibly with company management, build and communicate investment cases; write concisely and build Excel models for valuations, good understanding of financial analysis and equity valuation methods, understanding of environmental, social and governance issues. Experience covering Europe ex UK market and Small & Mid Cap stock coverage is preferred along with presenting investment capabilities and interaction with clients.
Minimum requirements/Candidate Profile:
- Able to engage credibly with company management.
- Able to build and communicate investment cases; write concisely and build Excel models for valuations.
- Good understanding of financial analysis and equity valuation methods.
- Good understanding of accounts and accounting standards.
- Understanding of environmental, social and governance issues.
- CFA, or working towards the qualification.
- Fluency (written and spoken) in English.
