Reporting to the Project Manager, the External Works Site Manager will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all external works activities on construction projects. This includes infrastructure, groundwork, drainage, roads, landscaping, and public realm works.
The External Works Site Manager will ensure that the works are delivered safely, within budget, and to the required quality standards, while coordinating subcontractors and maintaining compliance with UK construction regulations and company procedures.
Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise all external works operations on site.
- Coordinate daily activities of subcontractors, plant, and labour.
- Ensure works are delivered according to construction drawings, specifications, and program.
- Maintain site records including diaries, progress reports, and inspections.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act, CDM Regulations, and company safety procedures.
- Conduct site safety inductions, toolbox talks, and inspections.
- Ensure risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) are implemented and followed.
- Report incidents, near misses, and safety concerns.
Program & Planning
- Work with the Project Manager to develop and maintain the construction program.
- Monitor progress and address delays or coordination issues.
- Plan sequencing of works including drainage, kerbing, surfacing, utilities, and landscaping.
Quality Control
- Ensure works meet quality standards, specifications, and building regulations.
- Carry out inspections and sign-off of completed works.
- Manage snagging and defect rectification for external elements.
- Monitor plant usage and resource allocation.
- Attend site meetings and provide progress updates.
Subcontractor Coordination
- Manage external works subcontractors including: Groundworks contractors, Drainage specialists, Road and surfacing contractors, Landscaping teams, Utility providers.
Materials & Resources
- Coordinate delivery and use of materials such as: Aggregates, Drainage components, Kerbs and paving, Asphalt, Landscaping materials.
Stakeholder Communication
- Liaise with: Project Manager, Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Local authorities, Utility companies.
Personal Specifications
- Proven experience managing external works or groundworks packages.
- SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme).
- CSCS Manager Card.
- Strong knowledge of UK construction health and safety regulations.
- First Aid at Work – highly desirable.
- Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) - highly desirable.
- HNC/HND or Degree in Construction Management / Civil Engineering – highly desirable.
- Experience with Section 278 / highways works – highly desirable.
