We design and construct secure government buildings and courier diplomatic packages worldwide, safeguard government tech, and much more. Our work is varied and vital, but we never lose sight of our people. Their skills, aspirations, and growth mean as much as the global mission weâre on.
As an electrician at FCDO Services, youâll undertake electrical installation works both at home and overseas. From new builds to office refurbishments, upgrade works, and maintenance, youâll be assigned a variety of projects. Youâll work independently, lead multi-skilled small teams, or be part of a larger team, always prioritising safety and efficiency in accordance with FCDO Services processes and practices.
Youâll engage confidently with high-level diplomats, senior government officials, and international partners. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as youâll produce clear, accurate, and professional reports to inform decision-making at the highest level.
When based in the UK, youâll manage preparatory work for future overseas installations, including compiling Bills of Quantities and liaising with suppliers, Logistics, and Project Management teams to ensure site readiness. Youâll also provide support to team members overseas and contribute to the design and planning of electrical works.
The installation, commissioning, and reporting of electrical installations will include: LV distribution, small power, lighting, containment systems, fire alarms, and air conditioning in diplomatic missions. Worldwide travel is a core part of this job, requiring up to 22 weeks a year on overseas installations, typically lasting 1 to 8 weeks.
To be eligible, youâll have the following qualifications:
- NVQ Level 3 in electrical installations or equivalent
- AM2 qualification or equivalent
- City & Guilds 2391 Test and Inspection or equivalent
- ECS Gold Card holder with minimum âApprovedâ grading
- A working knowledge of BS 7671: 2018
This will be matched by substantial experience in electrical installation, where youâve practically applied your academic knowledge. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are also key.
Weâll be looking for three core Civil Service competencies during assessment: making effective decisions, managing a quality service, and working together. Experience working overseas, with other trades, and/or in secure environments (government offices, prisons, banks) would be beneficial. A working knowledge and experience of security systems, fire alarms (including GENT Vigilon), emergency lighting systems, and air conditioning systems (with a F-Gas certificate) is also desirable. Familiarity with IT packages, including MS Office and MS Visio, would be a plus.
It would be great if youâve completed a recognised apprenticeship, a CITB Certificate for SMSTS/SSSTS, and a professional accreditation with the IET.

Youâll also have access to training and development opportunities to help grow your career.
