Shift Operations Technician
Salary –£37,477 - £51,531per annum (plus benefits)
Hours – 40 hours per week, 12hr shifts
Location – Lostock EfW, CW9 7ZR
As a Shift Operations Technician at FCC Environment, you will play a vital role in the safe and efficient operation of our Energy from Waste (EfW) facility. Reporting to the Shift Team Leader, you will be responsible for operating high-pressure boilers, steam turbine generators, and associated auxiliary plant, helping to maximise plant reliability, flexibility, and availability while maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, quality, and environmental performance.
This vacancy is for a full-time position, working on a shift rota.

What will you be doing?
• Operate the EfW plant safely and efficiently under all operating conditions
• Use DCS systems to control operations within environmental and performance constraints
• Support first-line fault diagnosis and emergency response
• Conduct routine and emergency HV switching operations as required under FCC Safety Rules
• Ensure compliance with the Environmental Permit
• Prepare the plant for safe return to service after outages
• Write and review Standard Operating Procedures and risk assessments
• Undertake basic water/steam chemistry analysis and take corrective actions
• Contribute to team development and maintain a strong safety culture
• Acting as an Authorised Person under FCC Safety Rules within defined competence
What are we looking for?
• A strong safety-first mindset with the ability to operate safely and compliantly in all situations
• Experience in operating high-pressure boilers, turbines, and related plant equipment
• Familiarity with DCS systems and a good understanding of P&IDs
• Hands-on approach to routine and emergency plant operations
• A proactive attitude to energy efficiency and environmental performance
• Ability to carry out first-line maintenance and support the wider maintenance team
• Confidence in writing, reviewing and updating operational procedures and risk assessments
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work well within a small, motivated team
• Comfortable working a 12-hour rotating shift pattern, including days and nights
• Willingness to support outage planning, shutdowns, and business continuity
• Ability to operate mobile plant such as FLTs, cranes, and shovels (training can be provided)
• Flexible and self-motivated with potential for progression into Shift Team Leader role
• Flexibility to visit other FCC sites for training where required
Essential Experience:
• ONC/City & Guilds/NVQ Level 3 in process/thermal operations or equivalent
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in power generation, Energy from Waste or biomass operations
• Strong understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental compliance
• Familiar with DCS and plant control systems
• Able to operate or willing to train in FLTs, cranes, and mechanical shovels
• Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams
• Strong written/verbal communication and procedure-writing skills
• Willingness to support multi-skilling initiatives (electrical, mechanical, C&I)
• Satisfactory completion of relevant CMS modules and ongoing training requirements
