At FCC Environment, we are looking for a Mechanical Engineer Lead to take ownership of the performance, reliability and maintenance of all mechanical plant at our Gloucestershire Energy from Waste facility. This is a key role where you will act as the site’s mechanical technical expert, leading a skilled maintenance team while ensuring plant and equipment operate safely, efficiently and in full compliance with statutory regulations and environmental standards. About the Role:
As Mechanical Engineer Lead, you will be responsible for maintaining high standards of mechanical performance and plant availability across the facility. You will work closely with the operations department, contractors and senior site leadership to deliver safe, effective and efficient maintenance strategies for the site. This is a full-time position, working five days per week.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Lead and manage a team of mechanical maintenance technicians, ensuring plant is maintained to the highest standards, and availability is maximised.
- Champion high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance across the site.
- Act as the site’s technical lead for all mechanical maintenance activities.
- Diagnose faults, troubleshoot issues and conduct root cause analysis to improve reliability and performance.
- Ensure all mechanical equipment is maintained, tested and operated in line with statutory regulations and engineering best practice.
- Work collaboratively with the operations team to identify and deliver plant improvement initiatives.
- Monitor the condition of rotating plant using modern predictive maintenance techniques to minimise unplanned downtime.
- Coordinate preventative and reactive maintenance activities alongside the site planner.
- Plan and manage shutdowns and annual outage activities, including contractor supervision.
- Manage service contracts and Long-Term Service Agreements (LTSAs).
- Ensure departmental compliance with Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and FCC safety rules.
- Lead and coordinate statutory inspections, maintaining accurate documentation and compliance records.
- Support the Maintenance Manager with budget planning and strategic spare parts management.
- Identify team training needs and support the development of mechanical technicians.
What We’re Looking For:
We’re seeking an experienced engineering professional with strong leadership capability and a background in power generation or heavy industrial environments. You will ideally have:
- Extensive maintenance experience within power generation, including Energy from Waste (EfW), CCGT, biomass, oil, coal or similar heavy process industries.
- Strong practical knowledge of mechanical plant and equipment, including steam-raising plant, turbines, pumps, valves, conveyors and gearboxes.
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to motivate, develop and manage a technical team.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and safe systems of work.
- Working knowledge of statutory engineering regulations, including PSSR, LOLER and PUWER.
- An HNC/HND (or equivalent) in a Mechanical Engineering discipline.
- Experience working effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure operational environments.
- Experience coordinating contractors and third parties to deliver planned maintenance activities.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships across departments.
- Good IT skills, with experience using a CMMS, desirable.
