The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Concrete Quality Inspector / Concrete Engineer to support a major, high-profile construction development in South Wales. The project involves the delivery of a large-scale indoor entertainment and events venue, requiring exceptional standards of structural quality, technical compliance and attention to detail. This is a specialist, hands-on assignment for an experienced concrete professional with a strong understanding of reinforced concrete, reinforcement detailing, construction specifications and quality inspection. We are looking for someone who can hit the ground running, work independently and confidently identify, challenge and resolve quality issues on a live construction site. This is not a graduate or training opportunity. Key Responsibilities Undertake detailed inspections of reinforced-concrete works before, during and after concrete placement, in accordance with the agreed inspection scope. Inspect reinforcement installations, including bar sizes, spacing, laps, anchorage, couplers, concrete cover and compliance with structural drawings. Read, interpret and apply technical specifications, structural drawings, inspection and test plans (ITPs) and relevant quality documentation. Inspect formwork, embedded items, cast-in components, construction joints and other elements affecting structural concrete quality. Monitor concrete placement, compaction, finishing, curing and protection, as required. Check compliance with specified concrete grades, testing requirements and project acceptance criteria. Identify, document and report defects, deviations and non-conformances, following through on corrective actions. Maintain accurate inspection records, photographs, quality reports and supporting documentation. Liaise with site management, engineers, subcontractors and quality teams to resolve technical issues and prevent defective work from progressing. Ensure concrete-related works comply with project specifications, approved drawings and applicable standards. Essential Requirements Extensive practical experience in reinforced-concrete construction and quality inspection. Strong technical knowledge of reinforcement installation, detailing and inspection. Excellent ability to interpret structural drawings, specifications and technical construction documents. Proven experience identifying defects, managing non-conformances and maintaining quality records. Detailed knowledge of concrete workmanship, placement, testing and quality assurance processes. Experience working on complex construction projects for a main contractor, specialist concrete contractor or engineering consultancy. Ability to work autonomously, exercise sound technical judgement and challenge non-compliant work. A meticulous, detail-oriented approach with the confidence to make informed inspection decisions. Availability for a freelance assignment in Cardiff. Desirable Experience Chartered Engineer status through a relevant professional institution, such as ICE or IStructE. Experience on stadiums, arenas, major entertainment venues or other complex reinforced-concrete structures. Experience with inspection and test plans, hold points, quality assurance documentation and non-conformance reporting.
