An experienced Senior Site Manager or ambitious Site Manager looking to progress is required to work with the project team on a £100m+ new build higher education scheme in Southampton, Hampshire. This large new build faculty building is currently in the enabling works phase with piling due to start imminently, commencing a 2-year construction programme of works into summer 2027. This role is specifically to focus on the groundworks and structural packages. The frame is a mix of reinforced concrete, post-tensioned slabs, precast, and steel. You will be the Temporary Works Coordinator for this project as a key part of your role.
Reporting to the Senior Project Manager and working with the Package Manager, you will be responsible for managing all site-based construction activities including:
- Coordination of trade sub-contractors across multiple work-faces;
- Mid and short-term programming of works;
- Input to design coordination with the consultant design team to resolve technical queries;
- Ensuring high company health and safety standards are planned, communicated, and enforced;
- Review of method statements and risk assessments (RAMS);
- Review, coordination, and inspection of temporary work;
- Liaison with structural engineer;
- Organising deliveries of materials, logistics, waste management, etc;
- Quality control;
- Inspections and test plans;
- Coordination meetings with trades and other managers;
- Ensuring work progresses safely, on programme;
- Reporting on progress against the program;
- Issue resolution.
This is a new build project on a large brownfield site on the outskirts of Southampton, located within easy access of the M3 and the M27.
About the Company: The contractor is the busy regional office of a larger main contractor group with roughly £140m annual turnover for the region, and a proven track record in the delivery of medium to large new build and refurbishment schemes from £25m to £100m. Main sectors of work include higher and secondary education, health care, sport/leisure, and defence. The patch focus includes Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, with work secured through a mixture of negotiated schemes, national frameworks, and competitive tenders.
Requirements: The successful candidate will be highly motivated and proactive, demonstrating excellent organisational, man-management, and communication skills. You will have the capability to lead and motivate. Proven track record of work for a top twenty main contractor advantageous. Ideally from a construction management or engineering background, you will have ideally spent time working as a Site Engineer/Senior Engineer with responsibility for the groundworks and structural frame packages. Practical experience of managing these packages on a medium to large new build project is highly desirable for this particular role, as is experience of undertaking the Temporary Work Coordinator role. You will possess clear forward planning and problem-solving ability, with a positive, 'get it right first time' approach. A degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management would be preferable. This role would suit an experienced Senior Site Manager looking to consolidate this role in a large site team. It would also suit an ambitious Site Manager with the required specific technical and practical experience looking to progress and gain larger project experience on this career-defining project. You will possess your SMSTS, CSCS, First Aid, and Temporary Works Coordinator qualifications for this role.
