The Good Reader Pub & Kitchen is an independently operated gastropub in Crouch End, N8. This is a brilliant opportunity for a strong Senior Sous Chef ready for a first Head Chef role, or a hands-on Head Chef who is passionate about nurturing talent, working with quality suppliers and produce, and creating delicious, elevated gastropub food throughout the seasons.

Having built on a brilliant level of success in our first two years of trading with up to £25k a week on food, serving up to 300 roasts each Sunday, we are looking for a positive, passionate, and creative chef to help drive us to another level of trade. With midweek lunches, a Saturday brunch, and some open fire cooking to be integrated as soon as possible, we are looking for a chef with broad experience to help us grow through this evolution and reach a broader audience than that of our very busy local trade.

Initially working with chef/owner Joe, the aim is to take over creative control for complete autonomy within 3 months in the kitchen. With 150 covers inside and a further 150 outside, and manageable service levels through the week, we have a seasonally adjusting trade with autumn/winter being very busy in the 60 cover dining room and rest of the pub. This is a chance to take real ownership over time without stepping into a huge brigade operation.

We are looking for a hands-on creative cook for an ambitious, driven chef to work with an adventurous appetite within our clientele. You will lead a small kitchen team, drive standards, develop junior chefs, and help shape the next stage of the long-term food offer.

What we are looking for:

  • Passionate, creative & organised leadership
  • Positive service leadership & management relationships
  • Great knowledge of the London gastropub & restaurant scene
  • Broad experience across different kitchens - restaurants, gastro pubs, and event work are all beneficial to our operation
  • Level 3 food safety, HACCP, allergens & COSHH as standard
  • Confident running of a small team & passion for nurturing talent
  • Passion for the best of British pub food
  • Excellent work ethic

We have a creative and passionate team and are looking for someone who cares about excellent produce, keeping menu changes thriving, and above all else, drives to the very core of delicious with every dish.
