LEVEL 4 – To complement the professional work oft eachers by taking responsibility for agreed learning activities under anagreed system of supervision. This may involve planning, preparing anddelivering learning activities for individuals/groups or short term for wholeclasses. It may also involve monitoring pupils and assessing, recording andreporting on pupils achievement progress and development.

Responsiblefor the management and development of a specialist area within the schooland/or management of other teaching assistants including allocation andmonitoring of work, performance management and training.

SUPPORT FOR PUPILS

  • Assess theneeds of pupils and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to supportpupils’ learning
  • Establish productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations
  • Develop and implement IEPs
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom
  • Support pupils consistently whilst recognisingand responding to their individual needs
  • Encourage pupils to interact and workco-operatively with others and engage all pupils in activities
  • Promote independence and employ strategies torecognise and reward achievement of self-reliance
  • Provide feedback to pupils in relation toprogress and achievement

SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS

  • Organise and manage appropriate learningenvironment and resources
  • Within an agreed system of supervision, planchallenging teaching and learning objectives to evaluate and adjustlessons/work plans as appropriate
  • Monitor and evaluate pupil responses tolearning activities through a range of assessment and monitoring strategiesagainst pre-determined learning objectives
  • Provide objective and accurate feedback andreports as required on pupil achievement, progress and other matters, ensuringthe availability of appropriate evidence
  • Record progress and achievement inlessons/activities systematically and providing evidence of range and level ofprogress and attainment • Work within an established discipline policy toanticipate and manage behaviour constructively, promoting self-control andindependence
  • Supporting the role of parents in pupils’learning and contribute to/lead meetings with parents to provide constructivefeedback on pupil progress/achievement etc.
  • Administer and assess/mark tests and invigilateexams/tests
  • Production of lesson plans, worksheet, plansetc.

SUPPORT FOR THE CURRICULUM

  • Deliver learning activities to pupils withinagreed system of supervision, adjusting activities according to pupilresponses/needs
  • Deliver local and national learning strategiese.g. literacy, numeracy, KS3, early years and make effective use ofopportunities provided by other learning activities to support the developmentof pupils’ skills
  • Use ICT effectively to support learningactivities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use
  • Select and prepare resources necessary to leadlearning activities, taking account of pupils’ interests and language andcultural backgrounds
  • Advise on appropriate deployment and use ofspecialist aid/resources/equipment

SUPPORT FOR THE SCHOOL

  • Comply with and assist with the development ofpolicies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety andsecurity, confidentiality and data protection, reporting concerns to anappropriate person
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensureall pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims ofthe school
  • Establish constructive relationships andcommunicate with other agencies/professionals, in liaison with the teacher, tosupport achievement and progress of pupils
  • Take the initiative as appropriate to developappropriate multi-agency approaches to supporting pupils
  • Recognise own strengths and areas of specialistexpertise and use these to lead, advise and support others
  • Lead play and supervision during break andlunch times
  • Deliver out of school learning activitieswithin guidelines established by the school
  • Contribute to the identification and executionof appropriate out of school learning activities which consolidate and extendwork carried out in class

LINEMANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES WHERE APPROPRIATE

  • Manage otherteaching assistants
  • Liaisebetween managers/teaching staff and teaching assistants
  • Hold regularteam meetings with managed staff
  • Representteaching assistants at teaching staff/management/other appropriate meetings
  • Undertakerecruitment/induction/appraisal/training/mentoring for other teachingassistants

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Experience

  • Working with children of relevant age in a learning environment

Qualifications

  • Excellent numeracy/literacy skills – equivalentto NVQ Level 2 in English and Maths
  • NVQ 3 for Teaching Assistants or equivalentqualification or experience
  • Meet HLTA standards or equivalent qualificationor experience
  • Training in the relevant strategies e.g.literacy and/or in particular curriculum or learning area e.g. bi-lingual, signlanguage, dyslexia, ICT, maths, English, CACHE etc.
  • Appropriate first aid training

Knowledge & Skills

  • Can use ICT effectively to support learning
  • Use of other equipment technology – video,photocopier
  • Full working knowledge of relevantpolices/codes of practice and awareness of relevant legislation
  • Working knowledge and experience of implementing national/foundation stage curriculum and other relevant learningprogrammes/strategies
  • Good understanding of child development andlearning processes
  • Understanding of statutory framework relatingto teaching
  • Ability to organize, lead and motivate a team
  • Constantly improve own practice/knowledgethrough self-evaluation and learning from others
  • Ability to relate well to children and adults
  • Work constructively as part of a team,understanding classroom roles and responsibilities and your own position withinthese
