Description
As an Environmental Manager you will be expected to demonstrate strong influencing and people skills, working closely with project teams, clients, regulators, designers and supply chain partners to drive excellence in environmental compliance, permitting, carbon reduction, circular economy, biodiversity enhancement and climate resilience.
The role will see you supporting projects from pre-construction stage through construction and close-out, ensuring environmental performance is embedded into decision-making and that Farrans continues to exceed client expectations
You will contribute to the implementation and continuous improvement of environmental management systems, ensuring that environmental risks are effectively managed, legal obligations are met, and sustainability objectives are achieved.
Responsibilities
- Positively influence SHE leadership behaviours by your own actions, set the standard and demonstrate high standards of ethics and professional integrity
- Prepare Construction Environmental Management plans
- Plan and conduct regular audits of locations / projects environmental practices and documentation
- Assist and coordinate the external audit programme
- Support and assist with incident investigations and reporting to ensure company operating procedures are implemented
- Lead environmental agenda to ensure guidance and support is in place for project teams in relation to regulatory and client specific requirements
- Support and guide project teams with regards permitting and consent requirements
- Assist the implementation of a Farrans-wide consistent management approach to SHE requirements
- Support and guide Farrans’ management with a positive solutions-based approach to addressing challenges in environmental performance
- Keep up to date with legislative changes, maintain a legal register and ensure they are integrated in to the Company’s environmental management system
Empowering People
- Be fully engaged and support the implementation of the SHE competency toolkit, using it as a tool for self development
- Fully embrace and implement Farrans’ performance management process, using it as a tool to set and deliver SMART technical and competency related targets and objectives
- Coach, train and mentor Farrans’ staff in environmental matters through the audit process, incident investigations and relevant project matters
- Coach, guide and support Farrans’ supply chain through pre-start meetings, performance reviews etc. to secure their engagement and understanding of Farrans’ SHE expectations
- Prepare and deliver environmental-related training, briefings and CPD materials to facilitate staff promotion and progression
Customer Service
- Establish and foster positive professional relationships with keys clients, consultants and suppliers
- Provide environmental advice and support to project teams and supply chain during project mobilisation phase
- Provide environmental advice and support to ‘in-progress’ project management teams
- Prepare timely post-audit reports and identified actions to project and company management teams
- Monitor the completion of corrective & preventative actions and the close-out of NCR’s
- Assist in the preparation monthly SHE performance data and reports for management and senior leadership
- Provide advice and guidance to project management teams
- Provide feedback and communicate lessons learned/ best practice across the organisation

- Develop and maintain an open, transparent and consistent approach to improving SHE standards, through the audit process, incident investigations and any SHE reviews.

- Promote environmental performance and standards through local and nationwide memberships, affiliations and awards submissions.

- Assist and support the Bid team during tender and preconstruction stages
- Develop effective working relationships with project teams, senior management, clients, regulators and supply chain partners
- Represent Farrans at industry forums, working groups, client meetings and environmental networking events.
- Support Farrans position as recognised environmental sustainability leader on joint ventures
Sustainable Growth
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and apply a long-term plan to enhance Company environmental performance
- Participate in post-project reviews and lessons-learned exercises to ensure improvements are captured as part of the SHE improvement plans
- Support the development of continuous improvement practices including SHE alerts, communication and knowledge sharing
- Support the development and upskilling of key supply chain partners to achieve greater SHE performance
Qualifications
- At least five years’ experience working in construction environmental sustainability role.
- Effective working knowledge of environmental legislation, environmental permitting processes and compliance management.
- Working with multiple stakeholders and locations
- Working knowledge of BREEAM / BREEAM Infrastructure requirements on projects
- Working knowledge of issues such as noise, water management, ecology and waste management
- Experience collecting and analysing environmental performance data.
- Knowledge of carbon management and Net Zero principles within construction.
- Understanding of circular economy and resource efficiency practices.
- Understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain requirements.
- Experience of planning, implementing and operating SHEQ management standards and processes.
- Strong proficiency in MS Office suite (particularly Excel & Word) and using online project document management portals, such as Deltek PIM (FOCAL), Aconex, etc.
