What We Are Looking For:

In this pivotal role, the Estates Engineer (Electrical) is responsible for carrying out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) on Farnborough Airport’s infrastructure as well as carrying out reactive repair jobs and specialising in Electrical works.

Unlike a traditional office building, the airport’s infrastructure must function around the clock to accommodate a constant flow of passengers and aircraft. This role includes keeping the airport’s infrastructure safe and compliant. By carefully maintaining this complex ecosystem, you will be directly contributing to the seamless operation of Farnborough Airport.

This position is on a shift work basis, including being on-call on weekends and bank holidays. Occasionally, late shifts will be required which will be covered with overtime.

Role Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities include:

Maintenance Repairs:

  • Deliver PPM and reactive maintenance for airport buildings, infrastructure, and facilities including electrical works. These may involve (this list is non-exhaustive):
  • Inspecting, repairing, or installing furniture, fixtures, and fittings e.g., hang doors, install locks, lay carpet tiles, and erect studwork)
  • Internal small scale building works
  • General handy-work jobs
  • Painting and decorating
  • Works - on LV electrical systems up to 400V (distribution boards, final circuits, small power, lighting, emergency lighting, control circuits).
  • Fault-finding, diagnosis, and rectification on circuits, equipment, and protective devices (MCB, RCD, RCBO, AFDD where applicable).
  • Test, inspect, and certify works in line with BS 7671 using calibrated test instruments (EIC, MEIWC) and produce supporting documentation.

Domestic Electrical Works (18th Edition Compliant)

  • Install, upgrade, and maintain domestic wiring systems, including consumer unit replacements, ring final and radial circuits, cooker and shower circuits, and internal/external lighting.
  • Ensure Part P compliance and notification (where applicable), correct RCD/AFDD selection and SPD considerations, appropriate IP ratings, safe isolation, and cable routing/segregation in line with 18th Edition requirements.
  • Fit and commission smart controls/thermostats, and heat related electrical connections (where in scope).

Systems Facilities

  • Support reliability of critical services (UPS, generators, BMS interfaces, terminal and hangar systems).
  • Maintain and test emergency lighting (BS 5266) and fire alarm interfaces (BS 5839); complete routine tests and records.
  • Assist with minor project installations and upgrades, ensuring as-built drawings and O&M updates are provided.

Compliance, Safety Documentation

  • Work to BS 7671 (18th Edition) and the Electricity at Work Regulations, following safe systems of work, LOTO, and Permit-to-Work procedures (airside and landside).
  • Keep accurate records in the CMMS (e.g., PPMs, callouts, spares, asset notes).
  • Maintain tools and test equipment, ensuring calibration and inspection are up to date.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, contractors, and control authorities to plan and sequence works with minimal operational impact.
  • Escort contractors around site as and when required.
  • Liaise with airport tenants and stakeholders when carrying out jobs in working areas such as offices.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with the team, other staff members, tenants, and stakeholders.
  • Carry out work whilst ensuring to comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Identify which tools and materials are required for each job. Liaise with manager to order necessary items.

  • Aerodrome license and CAA standards.

  • Support the team with ad hoc activities/tasks as reasonably requested.

About you: Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent (e.g., City Guilds 2365/2330).
  • 18th Edition (BS 7671) qualification (e.g., C&G 2382-18 or latest amendment).
  • Proven experience in maintenance and domestic electrical works to 18th Edition standards.
  • Strong inspection, testing, and certification skills (competent with multifunction testers).
  • Evidence of Right to Work in the UK.
  • Full 5-year employment/educational history required (with no unaccounted-for gaps).
  • Able to obtain a clear Criminal Record Check (CRC) certificate to the required security clearance level for this role.
  • Hold a full valid UK Driving License or equivalent.
  • Experience in general building maintenance, preferably within a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Experience with PPM and reactive jobs.
  • Good knowledge of building systems.
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations.
  • Good communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.

Desirable:

  • C&G 2391 (or 2394/2395) Inspection Testing.
  • IPAF / PASMA.
  • Experience in airports, critical environments, or other highly regulated sites.
  • Familiarity with UPS, generators, EV chargers, PV inverters, BMS controls.
  • Basic networking/controls understanding for smart devices.
