About the role
We are looking for a diligent and proactive finance professional to join the Financial Control team and support the delivery of accurate accounting, back-office administration, reconciliations and control activities across the Society and its subsidiary companies.
This is a varied role that will suit someone who enjoys working with financial data, maintaining strong controls, improving processes, and building effective relationships with colleagues across finance and the wider business.
Governance, control, and compliance
You will be expected to carry out all duties in line with the Society's policies, procedures, delegated authorities, and relevant regulatory requirements.
The role requires strong attention to detail, accurate record keeping, timely completion of tasks and a commitment to maintaining effective financial controls.
- What you will be doing
- Processing, reviewing, and recording receipts, payments, journals, and other accounting transactions accurately across the general ledger, purchase ledger, and related systems.
- Preparing, checking, and processing banking items, including cheques, card receipts, cash, bank statements, BACS advice notes and miscellaneous bank transactions.
- Reconciling general ledger control accounts, wholesale and funding positions, and other financial records using Society systems, spreadsheets, and specialist accounting software.
- Supporting month-end and periodic accounting routines, including assistance with trial balance preparation and reporting for the Society and its subsidiary companies.
- Monitoring and reporting on mortgage pools on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, helping to maintain accurate records and improve the quality of underlying data.
- Managing and maintaining associated records between subsidiaries.
- Assisting with regulatory and external reporting requirements, including Bank of England returns.
- Contributing to the development, testing and improvement of Finance and Treasury systems, reports, models, and software upgrades.
- Maintaining clear, accurate and up-to-date procedure manuals and process documentation.
- Working collaboratively with internal teams, suppliers, authorised institutions, counterparties and other third parties.
- Preparing schedules, working papers, and supporting evidence for statutory accounts and external audit.
- Supporting meetings, projects and other related activities as required by line management.
- Measures of success
- Financial transactions, journals, and reconciliations are processed accurately, completely and within agreed deadlines.
- Month-end, periodic and regulatory reporting activities are completed on time, with clear supporting evidence and minimal rework required.
- Control account reconciliations, mortgage pool records and Treasury back-office records are maintained to a high standard.
- Issues, exceptions, or data quality concerns are identified promptly, escalated appropriately, and followed through to resolution.
- Finance and Treasury stakeholders receive timely, professional, and reliable support.
- Internal policies, delegated authorities, and regulatory requirements are consistently followed.
About you
Essential requirements
- Sound accounting knowledge and the ability to process, review, and reconcile financial information accurately.
- Strong Excel, SQL and Power BI skills, with experience using general ledger and treasury applications
- A good understanding of financial controls, procedures, record keeping, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, particularly when working with reporting data and system outputs.
- Effective communication and relationship-building skills, with confidence working across teams.
- A proactive, organised, and self-motivated approach, with the ability to manage routine deadlines alongside ad hoc tasks.
Desirable requirements
- A degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or a related discipline and current study towards ACCA, ACA, or CIMA.
- A continuous improvement mindset and willingness to support system testing, process development and improvements to financial reporting and control activities.
