Director of Mineral Resources in Stanley

THE OPPORTUNITY

This truly is an exciting opportunity in an unparalleled location. We are looking for a Director of Mineral Resources to join our team as we finalise and implement our new regulatory framework and start regulating a live oil industry in the Islands. The Falkland Islands Government has recently granted its first regulatory approval for a field development and production programme, which is expected to start producing oil in 2028. This is an unrivalled opportunity to make an impact as we start our journey as an oil-producing country.

THE ROLE

Working in what can only be described as a unique and breath-taking environment, the Director of Mineral Resources will oversee the ongoing development of the offshore hydrocarbons industry to support the wider economic development within the Falkland Islands. The postholder is responsible for leading the Mineral Resources Directorate and ensuring the effective and efficient regulation of all offshore petroleum and onshore minerals activity to a high standard. As a member of the Corporate Management Team (CMT), the Director will contribute to the corporate and strategic management of the Government, working to ensure Government is pursuing a coherent and practical strategy in line with political priorities.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL:

• Have extensive experience (10+ years) of effectively leading complex and large-scale teams, projects and programmes of a similar level, ideally in a regulatory capacity.
• Have extensive experience of operating within the public sector or third sector (government or non-government) that has involved licensing management.
• Can provide demonstrable experience of working in a senior operational or regulatory role, including responsibility for effective business and financial planning and project management.
• Be able to effectively manage and deliver the full range of senior management challenges including budgets, performance management, people management, project management and business and strategic planning.
• Have excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, including the ability to debate constructively and win confidence, whilst maintaining professional credibility and constructive working relationships.
• Have the proven ability to work effectively in a complex political and stakeholder environment, including effective engagement with the media.
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, or other evidence of suitable training and job experience.
• Hold a Masters degree in either health, safety or environment, or alternative business qualification or equivalent experience.
• Hold Chartered Membership of an appropriate professional institute.
