Role Purpose
As our Recruitment Consultant specialising in business development, you will be responsible for identifying and winning new clients, securing new job mandates for our recruitment business, and then once we place a candidate you brought in, you earn commission from the candidate’s salary (or from the placement fee derived from their salary). You will act as the link between our firm and new client organisations and help expand our job-bank via your networking, sales, and business development skills. Our internal Team is helping with the Sourcing.
Key Responsibilities
- Proactively research, approach and win new corporate clients (companies) needing recruitment services.
- Secure new job mandates (vacancies) from clients (i.e., the client gives us a job to fill).
- Negotiate terms of engagement with clients (fee structure, guarantee period, service level).
- Liaise with internal recruitment teams to ensure the job mandate is handed over smoothly (once client is onboarded, our team sources the candidate).
- Ensure that once a candidate is placed in that client’s job, you receive the agreed commission from the salary/fee.
- Maintain a pipeline of prospective clients and job mandates, update CRM / tracking system with status and next actions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with new clients for repeat business and referrals.
- Achieve monthly/quarterly new-client and job-mandate targets.
- Work to identify target sectors / companies, attend networking events, cold-call, email campaigns, LinkedIn outreach, and meetings.
- Provide regular updates and reporting on new business development activity (meetings, mandates secured, expected commissions).
- Collaborate with internal teams (recruitment consultants, delivery, operations) to ensure client satisfaction and smooth process.
Commission & Earnings Structure
This role is commission‐based (no or minimal base salary, or optionally a modest retainer) — your earnings are directly tied to performance (new clients + job mandates + successful placements). Commission is paid when a candidate you originated (via the client/job you brought) is placed and the client pays the placement fee (or as soon as guaranteed period is passed, depending on terms).
Example structure:
- You bring in a client + job mandate. Once the candidate is placed and starts, you receive X% of the placement fee or Y% of the candidate’s first year salary (or agreed flat amount).
- Tiered commission: e.g., for first £50k in placement fees in a year, you earn 20 %; for £50k-£100k, you earn 25 %; above £100k you earn 30 %.
- Optionally: bonus for securing new clients who go on to place 3+ candidates within 12 months.
- Uncapped earnings: there is no cap on commissions — more clients, more jobs, more placements = higher return.
- Payment terms: commission paid monthly/quarterly after invoicing and guarantee period expiry (for example 3 months free replacement).
Additional benefits (optional): company-provided tools (CRM, LinkedIn Recruiter licence), training, exposure to senior decision makers, flexible working.
Person Specification / Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Proven track record in business development, sales or recruitment (ideally within recruitment industry) — ability to win new clients and mandates.
- Strong networking skills, confident in cold‐calling, outbound sales, meeting senior decision makers.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship‐building skills.
- Self-starter, highly motivated, target driven, comfortable working on a performance-only model.
- Good commercial acumen – understands how placement fee structures and candidate salary relate to commission potential.
- Organised, able to manage pipeline, CRM records, forecasting, and work independently.
Desirable:
- Existing network of corporate clients or hiring managers in a particular industry/sector (e.g., IT, engineering, finance).
- Experience or familiarity of recruitment process/market – though your role is primarily business development, understanding the candidate placement side helps.
- Comfortable with remote/hybrid working and using digital tools (CRM, LinkedIn, job-boards, video calls).
- Resilient and comfortable in a role where earnings are directly tied to success (so you’re motivated by high reward, high risk).
What We Offer
- Genuine opportunity to earn unlimited commission — your efforts generate your income.
- Flexibility: work remotely/hybrid, manage your own schedule and prospecting activity.
- Support: Access to our internal recruitment delivery team (we handle candidate sourcing/delivery) so you can focus on client development.
- Tools: We provide CRM access, company marketing materials, job-board access, and lead-generation support.
- Career growth: As you bring clients and jobs, there is scope to move into senior BD roles, team lead, or even branch management.
