An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an experienced Strategic Health & Safety leader to shape, govern, and assure Health & Safety performance across a complex, multi-site operational environment. This senior, part-time position (3 days per week) reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and plays a critical role in advising the Executive Team and Board, acting as the organisation's competent authority and Corporate Duty Holder. You will set the strategic direction for Health & Safety, ensuring robust governance, legal compliance, and effective assurance across all operations while championing a positive, learning-led safety culture.
Responsibilities include:
- Acting as Corporate Duty Holder and primary competent person
- Owning the H&S strategy, governance framework, and policy suite
- Advising, influencing, and constructively challenging Executive and Board stakeholders
- Setting standards, risk appetite, and performance measures
- Overseeing audit, assurance, compliance, and regulatory engagement
- Providing executive-level oversight of serious incidents and risk trends
- Supporting operational leadership to deliver safe, compliant performance
- Driving continuous improvement in safety culture and systems
Skills:
- NEBOSH Diploma and Certified IOSH Membership (essential)
- Significant experience leading H&S strategy, governance, and management systems
- A proven track record of advising and challenging Executive and Board stakeholders
- Strong background in audit, assurance, compliance, and regulatory engagement
- Deep knowledge of UK H&S legislation, duty-holder responsibilities, and HSG65/ISO-aligned systems
- Sound professional judgement, ethical leadership, and the ability to influence culture at scale
