Job Description

The Shift Building Operator - Building Engineer (Laundry & Controls) reports to the Director, Engineering & Facility Operations and is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all commercial laundry equipment and associated systems throughout the resort.

This role ensures the continuous operation of laundry production equipment, supporting hotel operations through effective preventative maintenance, rapid response to equipment failures, and collaboration with Engineering and Laundry teams.

The Shift Building Operator works closely with colleagues across the resort to maintain the highest standards of safety, reliability, efficiency, and guest service.

  • Key Responsbilities
  • Laundry Equipment Operations & Maintenance
  • Operate, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all commercial laundry equipment and associated systems.
  • Monitor and maintain industrial washers, dryers, ironers, folders, spreaders, valet equipment, dry-cleaning equipment, and related peripheral machinery.
  • Peripheral equipment includes Steam Systems, Hot water reclaim devices, air compressors, lint screening devices, Programmable Logic Computers, Variable Frequency Drives and Starting Equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on laundry equipment in accordance with established schedules and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and steam-related equipment failures and implement corrective actions promptly.
  • Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime and operational disruption.
  • Report major maintenance and equipment issues to the Lead Shift Building Operator and Director/Assistant Director, Engineering & Facility Operations.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are performed safely and in accordance with manufacturer specifications and applicable regulations.
  • Building Systems Support
  • Support the operation and maintenance of building systems as required, including mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, pneumatic and utility systems associated with laundry operations.
  • Monitor utility consumption, steam supply, water systems, chemical dispensing equipment, and compressed air systems serving the laundry facility.
  • Conduct routine inspections of laundry facilities, mechanical rooms, and equipment areas.
  • Work collaboratively with other Shift Building Operators to ensure the smooth operation of the resort's infrastructure and support systems.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and repairs of related building systems when operational needs require.
  • Preventative & Corrective Maintenance
  • Execute planned preventative maintenance programs for laundry equipment and associated systems.
  • Innovate and create additional preventative maintenance activities in response to the hotels back of house operation.
  • Complete assigned work orders accurately and within established timelines.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, equipment performance, and parts usage.
  • Assist in equipment upgrades, refurbishment projects, and operational improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
  • Recommend equipment improvements and maintenance strategies to improve reliability and efficiency.
  • Laundry Operations Support
  • Coordinate closely with Laundry Operations to ensure equipment availability and production efficiency.
  • Support daily laundry processing requirements through proactive maintenance planning.
  • Minimize operational interruptions while carrying out maintenance activities.
  • Assist with equipment commissioning, testing, and operational start-up procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Laundry colleagues when required.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and provide exceptional customer service to guests and colleagues.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all health, safety, environmental, and engineering policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to Lockout/Tagout procedures and safe work practices.
  • Handle and work safely around chemicals, steam systems, moving machinery, and laundry processing equipment.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness programs and operational response procedures.
  • Identify hazards and implement corrective actions to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with all local regulations, safety standards, and applicable codes.
  • Support a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Energy Management & Sustainability
  • Support Accor and Fairmont sustainability objectives and environmental initiatives.
  • Monitor laundry equipment performance and utility consumption.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce water, steam, electrical, and chemical usage.
  • Assist with energy efficiency initiatives and resource conservation programs.
  • Support preventative maintenance strategies that maximize equipment lifecycle and reliability.
  • Contribute to cost control initiatives through effective maintenance and equipment management.
  • Work closely with Housekeeping, Laundry Operations, Front Office, Security, Food & Beverage, Spa, Golf, and other departments to support operational requirements.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with external contractors, equipment suppliers, and service providers.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training programs, and technical development initiatives.
  • Support fellow Engineering team members and provide assistance across disciplines when required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Engineering department.
  • Deliver exceptional service to both internal and external customers.

Experience

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience as a Laundry Mechanic in a full-size industrial, hotel, resort, healthcare, institutional, or commercial laundry operation.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining and repairing industrial washers, dryers, ironers, folders, spreaders, valet systems, and dry-cleaning equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, steam, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience working with preventative maintenance programs and computerized work order systems.
  • Experience responding to emergency equipment failures and production downtime events.
  • Knowledge of Ellis, Weir, Passat, Challenger, and Kannegiesser equipment is considered an asset.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Recognized Trades Certificate, Technical Diploma, or equivalent industrial maintenance training considered an asset.
  • Additional certifications in Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical Systems, Industrial Equipment Maintenance, HVAC, Plumbing, Controls or related disciplines are advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial and industrial laundry equipment and associated utility systems.
