Fairhurst LLP is one of the UK’s largest private multidisciplinary partnerships of consulting engineers, delivering civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental, transportation, planning, water, and landscape architecture services across 16 principal offices in the UK. The firm specialises in providing cost‑effective, sustainable engineering solutions and prides itself on high-quality service delivery, technical excellence, and long-standing client relationships.

The Project Structural Engineer will take ownership of the structural design and technical delivery for building and infrastructure projects—coordinating calculations, drawings, and specifications, and interfacing with Fairhurst’s civil, geotechnical, environmental, and transportation teams to provide integrated, buildable solutions. You’ll work closely with project managers, senior engineers, and clients from concept through construction, ensuring designs meet UK codes, are sustainable, and provide real value.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design & Technical Delivery: Produce and check structural calculations, analysis models, and drawings for steel, concrete, timber, and masonry structures in accordance with UK codes and Eurocodes. Develop concept, scheme, and detailed designs; prepare specifications and schedules; and contribute to design risk assessments (CDM). Lead the structural workstream for assigned projects, coordinating inputs with civil, geotechnical, and other disciplines to deliver fully integrated designs.
  • Coordination & Communication: Work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders (architects, MEP, contractors, and clients) to resolve design issues and ensure buildability. Participate in design reviews, value‑engineering workshops, and site meetings; provide clear technical advice and reporting.
  • Quality, Compliance & Sustainability: Apply Fairhurst’s quality procedures and contribute to design checking/verification. Ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g., BS EN Eurocodes, UK Building Regulations) and client/employer’s requirements. Embed sustainability considerations (materials efficiency, whole‑life performance, low‑carbon design) consistent with Fairhurst’s values.
  • Delivery & Commercial Awareness: Plan personal workload, meet programme milestones, and support cost estimates and fee proposals. Identify and manage technical risks; help minimise rework through robust design and coordination.
  • Site Support: Provide technical responses to RFIs, review contractor proposals, and undertake site inspections to verify compliance with design intent during construction.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (MEng/BEng or equivalent).
  • Proven experience in structural engineering design and delivery within consultancy or design‑and‑build environments.
  • Working toward or having achieved CEng (IStructE/ICE) is advantageous.
  • Experience with structural analysis and BIM/drafting tools (e.g., TEDDS/STAAD/ETABS/Robot, Tekla/Tekla Tedds, Revit, AutoCAD/Civil 3D). Fairhurst teams widely use Autodesk platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of UK codes (Eurocodes), detailing standards, and construction methods.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary inputs.
