Role Overview – Fairhurst is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join our Newcastle Office. As one of the UK’s leading private Engineering Consultancies, Fairhurst delivers integrated solutions for a broad range of public and private sector clients. This position provides the opportunity to lead technically challenging projects, contribute to business growth, and mentor junior engineers within a collaborative and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and deliver UK‑based structural engineering projects in accordance with UK Building Regulations and all relevant design standards.
  • Lead and undertake structural engineering assessments and inspections of new and existing buildings in steel, concrete, masonry, and timber.
  • Carry out detailed analysis and design using industry‑standard software including Tekla Structural Designer and Tedds.
  • Prepare high‑quality drawings, calculations, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Produce well‑structured technical reports, including structural surveys and design justifications.
  • Coordinate and oversee multiple concurrent projects, ensuring deadlines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
  • Manage work packages, project resources, and deliverables to support successful project delivery.
  • Contribute to project programmes, risk management, and efficient workflow planning.
  • Maintain clear documentation, progress updates, and project records in line with Fairhurst’s quality systems.
  • Engage professionally with clients, contractors, statutory bodies, and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Represent Fairhurst at external meetings, networking events, and industry functions as required.
  • Work in accordance with Fairhurst’s Quality Assurance procedures and industry legislation.
  • Review work of junior staff to ensure accuracy, compliance, and high technical quality.
  • Provide technical guidance, supervision, and mentorship to Graduate and Project Engineers.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Strong experience working as a Senior Structural Engineer within a UK consultancy environment.
  • Proven track record delivering projects across industrial, residential, retail, commercial, and healthcare sectors.
  • Varied experience with common structural forms and building types.
  • Excellent report writing, communication, and numerical skills.
  • Strong organisational abilities with the capacity to manage multiple projects.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Commercial awareness and ambition to contribute to Fairhurst’s growth.
  • Proficient in relevant design software including Tekla Structural Designer and Tedds.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence.
