At fabrik we work hard to make our projects remarkable so that they endure in the memories of all who experience them. The climate is changing, and the evidence overwhelmingly points to human activity as the principal driver of this change; our work is more important now than ever before. We have the agency, skills and intent to challenge these trends in our consideration of new urban and rural developments so that they are resilient to climate change and protected for future generations.
fabrik is a creative, independent, 100% employee‑owned organisation of urban designers, landscape architects and arboriculturists, with a mission to design and build better places, and to improve the physical and mental health of the communities through engagement with sustainably designed and natural landscapes.
Our arboricultural team, tree:fabrik, has a vacancy in our Alton studio for an arboricultural consultant to support the delivery of planning‑led consultancy services across a range of development and land management projects. The role will focus on BS5837:2012 work, including:
- Tree surveys
- Arboricultural Impact Assessments
- Tree Protection Plans
- Arboricultural Method Statements
- Technical input to planning submissions
Key for the successful candidate will be a strong working knowledge of BS5837:2012, excellent tree identification skills and experience undertaking tree surveys for development sites. You should be confident assessing tree quality and constraints, including Root Protection Areas, canopy constraints, tree categorisation and demolition and construction impacts.
You will be able to collect and manage survey data using OTISS, prepare tree schedules, RPAs, canopy spreads and retention categories, and use KeyTREE to assist with BS5837 outputs. Confident use of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office packages is essential for drawing review, drawing production, reporting, schedules, correspondence and project information.
The role will involve preparing or assisting with AIAs, AMSs and TPPs, identifying direct and indirect impacts on retained trees, advising on tree protection and design amendments, and providing clear technical advice to clients, consultants, local authorities and wider project teams.
An understanding of veteran trees, ancient trees and ancient woodland constraints is required, including the ability to recognise veteran and ancient tree features, understand buffer requirements and advise proportionately within the planning process.
You must have a Level 4 or equivalent qualification in arboriculture, forestry or a related subject, or demonstrable equivalent professional experience, together with a full UK driving licence. Professional membership, Lantra Professional Tree Inspection, QGIS experience, BS3998 knowledge, reserved matters or condition discharge experience, and veteran tree or ancient woodland training would be beneficial.
