Role Summary
A Tax Specialist at Roche is the technical engine room for our UK and Irish tax operations. This role is the foundational starting point for our entire tax lifecycle, from ensuring airtight compliance and reporting to providing the data‑driven insights that fuel our analytical work. You will act as the central hub between our tax functions, shared service centers, and local business units, collaborating across teams building a precise and compliant tax operation. Here, your mastery of the details doesn’t just meet a deadline; it provides the stability that allows Roche to invest in life‑changing innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate the Compliance Lifecycle: Take a lead role in the end‑to‑end direct and indirect tax processes (Corporation Tax, VAT, Plastic Packaging Tax, PAYE Settlement Agreement), bridging the gap between our in‑house team, shared services, and external partners to ensure absolute accuracy.
- Drive Reporting Integrity: Oversee the tax elements of monthly group reporting and annual statutory accounts, ensuring our tax accounting is a reliable “source of truth” for the wider finance organization and external stakeholders.
- Manage Technical Responses: Act as a key technical resource in managing queries and engagement with tax authorities helping to articulate our tax position with clarity and precision.
- Enable Business Decisions: Act as a proactive point of contact, providing clear and practical tax guidance to help our business partners navigate their day‑to‑day challenges.
- Data Insight & Visualization: Transform raw compliance data into clear, actionable insights using visualization tools (e.g., Power BI or Tableau), helping non‑tax stakeholders understand the “story” behind the numbers.
- Champion Tax Governance: Support high‑impact projects and transactions, ensuring our tax governance frameworks remain robust and adaptable to business changes.
- Operationalize Global Strategy: Help translate global tax policies, including Transfer Pricing, into local action, ensuring our cross‑border operations are fully aligned with Roche’s standards.
- Drive Tax Transformation: Lead the adaptation of our tax processes to an evolving landscape, proactively managing the impact of legislative shifts (like Pillar Two) and partnering on ERP and tax‑tech enhancements to automate workflows and elevate our analytical capabilities.
- Business Partnership: Leverage your unique proximity to financial data and business operations to forecast tax impacts, preparing the organization for legislative shifts and identifying opportunities to integrate tax‑efficient processes directly into the commercial workflow enabling long‑term strategic decision making.
Essential Qualities
- Tax Technical Expertise: Professional qualification (CTA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent) with a robust understanding of the UK tax landscape; Irish tax experience is a distinct advantage.
- Multinational Perspective: Experience within a complex corporate environment or a leading professional services firm, with a proven ability to navigate both direct and indirect tax workstreams.
- Analytical Curiosity: A mindset that naturally looks beyond the “what” to the “why,” with the ability to translate dense financial data into clear, strategic narratives.
- Boldness: A desire to question the status‑quo, looking for opportunities to change for the better.
- Digital Fluency: Advanced proficiency in ERP systems (SAP preferred) and Excel. A forward‑thinking approach to tax technology, with an interest in leveraging tools like Power BI, Tableau, or Alteryx to drive efficiency.
- Commercial Acumen: The ability to quickly grasp Roche’s business model and supply chain, allowing you to identify tax risks and opportunities within a commercial context.
- Impactful Communication: A skilled “tax translator” who can build strong networks across the business, shared services, and global teams, communicating technical concepts with clarity to non‑tax stakeholders.
- Adaptive Ownership: Highly organized and able to work independently, with the agility to pivot between high‑volume compliance cycles and complex, long‑term strategic projects.
