An exciting opportunity to work in EY’s Global Grants Credits & Incentives team, alongside other STEM professionals, as well as tax and accounting colleagues. As a Senior Science/Engineering Consultant you will work with a variety of clients, from owner‑managed businesses to multinational groups, who are at the front line developing cutting‑edge technology helping the UK stay as a market leader by encouraging investment into research and development.
The successful candidate will work as part of a diverse team of industry and tax specialists. You will lead interviews with senior technical personnel at our clients across a wide range of industries to identify the scientific and technological aspects of their R&D projects that qualify for R&D tax relief, and you will play an active role in writing and reviewing reports of clients’ R&D projects and taking part in extensive client communication. In addition to working directly with existing clients, you will support business‑development opportunities and cross‑sector claims.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Work effectively as a member of a project team, exhibiting strong communication skills and collaborating with team members of different skill sets.
- Write and review compelling technical project reports to highlight key technical factors of client projects supporting R&D tax claims.
- Take a leading role in interacting with clients’ senior technical and engineering staff to develop a comprehensive understanding of projects and identify how aspects meet the R&D Guidelines.
- Apply advanced problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills to project execution and delivery.
- Build and maintain relationships with clients to provide high‑level client service.
- Ensure high‑quality delivery of advice and solutions to major clients, managing risk and reputation.
- Adapt and flex existing knowledge to different sectors, building on core capabilities.
Skills And Attributes For Success
- Strong interest in science, technology, and engineering problems.
- Industry‑based experience dealing with technological challenges such as engineering design, experimental process, development or improvement of manufacturing processes, new product development, and improvement of existing products.
- Swift adaptation and learning across different industry sectors – automotive, aerospace, civil, defence, food & drink, life sciences, electronics – with strong business acumen.
- Ability to interact with other technical professionals and excel in producing concise summaries of information.
- Strong attention to detail and first‑time accuracy.
- Interest in project and company finances and the application of tax treatment.
To qualify for the role, you must have
- Degree qualified – Science, technology, or engineering.
- Industry experience in science, technology, or engineering (2+ years).
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills and a collaborative approach to management.
- Flexibility to constantly learn and adapt in a fast‑paced environment.
Ideally, you’ll also have
- Previous R&D tax experience is advantageous but not required.
