The EY Corporate Finance M&A practice is an innovative, award-winning team, regularly closing high-profile cross-border sell-side, buy-side and finance-raising transactions, supporting a range of clients from high-growth businesses to multinational listed companies. The dynamic and diverse team consists of approximately 100 individuals of varying professional backgrounds, including bankers, accountants, industry professionals and consultants. Working with us will entail both formal and on-the-job learning from sector experts, which will help you develop the skills needed to become an effective advisor.

This is a rare opportunity to join a market-leading, entrepreneurial team working across a range of sectors based in the Birmingham office, during a significant period for EY in the region with our move to a brand-new office in the Paradise development in the autumn. While we look for the right person to join our Birmingham M&A team, there is also the opportunity to work on transactions across the wider EY M&A practice.

  • Sale of a leading K-12 schools’ group to a large-cap, European private-equity house
  • Sale of Midlands-based premium office furniture brand Boss Design to Japanese listed Okamura
  • Acquisition of InTime Logistik by Priority Freight
  • Sale of Euro Food Brands to management backed by NatWest
  • Sale of Ritter Courivaud, as a carve-out from Tesco/Booker Plc to Musgrave Group
  • Sale of Adare SEC to Mail Metrics backed by MML

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Support in the preparation of transaction marketing materials and other client deliverables
  • Valuation analysis and calculation using market-practice methodology, including sensitivity/scenario analysis and analysis of financial data
  • Deal management and management of key stakeholders on projects, including other advisors
  • Commercial and financial advice on key contracts forming part of the transaction, and negotiation with project stakeholders
  • Support in the development and maintenance of client relationships, including pitch/proposal preparation, presentation to clients, origination and marketing initiatives and account pursuit

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • High degree of personal drive and motivation to enhance your own knowledge and succeed
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Highly competent in Microsoft Office
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills (financial modelling capability is also favoured)
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with individuals, organisations and clients
  • Ability to work under pressure, handling multiple projects and tight deadlines

Ideally, you’ll also have:

  • Prior experience of working in and/or a passion for M&A
  • Commitment to business development and the ability to identify new business opportunities
  • Strong academic track record and educated to degree level
  • Advanced professional financial qualification (e.g. ACA, CFA, MBA), ideally with first-time passes
