The opportunity
Our London-based U.S. Tax practice continues to see strong growth driven by rising demand from European asset managers with U.S. investors and U.S. activities, particularly in the private equity, hedge fund, credit, and real‑estate fund sectors. As the volume and complexity of U.S. state tax requirements increases for our clients, we are expanding our State & Local Tax (SALT) leadership team. We are seeking an experienced and technically strong U.S. SALT Senior Manager to lead complex engagements, drive operational excellence, develop our people, and support continued practice growth. This is a highly visible leadership role in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Your key responsibilities
- Leading the delivery of complex U.S. state and local income tax compliance engagements, including multistate partnership and corporate filings, combined/unitary returns, withholding obligations, and state modifications.
- Leading advisory engagements involving state tax controversy, restructuring, mergers & acquisitions, new fund launches, and U.S. market entry.
- Managing large‑scale engagements (2,500+ hours), including budgeting, resource planning, risk assessments, and quality control across multiple deadlines and deliverables.
- Supporting business development efforts, including identifying opportunities within existing accounts, contributing to proposals, and attending prospective client meetings.
Skills and attributes for success
What we look for
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to manage large and technically complex multistate engagements.
- Deep technical knowledge of U.S. state and local tax rules, including nexus, apportionment, sourcing, combined/unitary filings, withholding regimes, and investment‑fund‑specific SALT issues.
- Strong judgement with the ability to translate technical state tax concepts into practical, commercial advice for asset managers.
- Excellent time and project management skills in a fast‑paced, deadline-driven environment.
To Qualify for the Role, You Must Have
- Current CPA, EA, or equivalent qualification, or a degree/master’s degree in accounting or taxation (or equivalent).
- Extensive experience leading state partnership and corporate tax compliance projects, including multistate filings and apportionment.
- Significant experience reviewing state taxable income calculations and managing large-scale fund compliance projects.
- Strong working knowledge of GoSystems or equivalent U.S. tax compliance software.
- A minimum of 8+ years of relevant U.S. SALT experience, ideally within financial services.
Ideally, you’ll also
- Prior experience managing engagements of 2,000+ hours and teams of 5+ individuals across multiple jurisdictions.
- Experience with fund-of-funds SALT reporting, tiered partnerships, and investment‑entity structures.
