ExpressVPN is seeking a strategic and creative Communications Director to lead our global communications function. This is a critical role responsible for shaping and executing our external communications strategy to elevate brand awareness, manage reputation, and advance our mission to protect digital privacy and security. You will lead global media relations, develop compelling narratives, oversee external PR partners, and collaborate across the business to ensure consistent, engaging, and impactful messaging.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead a global communications strategy that supports business growth and brand reputation across all markets.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with top-tier global media, tech reporters, lifestyle editors, influencers (YouTubers, podcasters, etc.), and thought leaders. Secure high-impact coverage and press opportunities.
  • Own the creation and quality control of press releases, executive messaging, media briefing docs, and thought leadership content. Simplify complex tech topics into compelling narratives.
  • Oversee PR agency partners to ensure aligned execution, strong coverage, and measurable output across key markets.
  • Work closely with product, engineering, partnerships, marketing, legal, and leadership to shape external messaging around new features, releases, and strategic priorities.
  • Support the partnerships and affiliate teams with storytelling, PR support, and campaign amplification around key launches.
  • Develop and manage communication protocols and playbooks for sensitive issues, including reputation risk and crisis scenarios.
  • Mentor and support comms and content team members, help define org structure, and lead day-to-day collaboration across the business.

Role Requirements

  • 10-15 years of experience in public relations or strategic communications roles, ideally in the B2C consumer tech, digital services, or consumer app/subscription services.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English, with a strong portfolio of media coverage and content.
  • Proven track record in managing global media relations and securing impactful earned media.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills with experience working in cross-functional, distributed teams.
  • High emotional intelligence (EQ) and stakeholder management ability.
  • Strategic thinking with a hands‐on, execution‐focused mindset.
  • Ability to distill complex technical concepts into relatable, engaging stories for a broad audience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in cybersecurity and privacy.
  • Experience navigating crisis communications or high‐sensitivity reputation scenarios.
  • Comfortable working in fast‐paced, globally distributed organizations.
