Express Recruitment are proud to be representing a leading civil and structural engineering consultancy in the East Midlands who is looking to recruit a Senior Structural Engineer to join their growing team. With a strong reputation for delivering innovative, sustainable design solutions across diverse and complex projects, this consultancy has been at the forefront of engineering excellence for over 40 years. The role is based at their Derby office and offers the chance to work alongside a skilled team of Chartered and developing Engineers.
The successful candidate will contribute to a wide range of structural projects including new builds, refurbishments, and heritage/conservation schemes. Duties will include structural design and analysis, producing detailed calculations, and liaising with clients and contractors. You’ll also manage project costs, ensure compliance with CDM regulations, and support sustainability goals.
We’re looking for someone with considerable relevant experience in a UK-based consultancy and strong technical expertise. Experience with heritage or conservation work is essential, along with confidence in designing with timber, steel, masonry and concrete. Chartered status (or working towards it), excellent attention to detail, and solid report writing skills are all key.
This role offers a salary of up to £60,000 depending on experience, plus a profit share bonus, relocation grant, and private AXA healthcare. Benefits also include 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, funded training, paid professional fees, pension scheme, and a supportive, flexible working environment.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead the residential structural design and delivery of complex and bespoke new build, refurbishment, and heritage projects across a variety of sectors
- Carry out in depth surveys across UK customer sites and ensure detailed reports are completed
- Produce and review structural calculations, specifications, and detailed design drawings in line with UK and European codes
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to Junior Engineers and Technicians, including QA reviews and mentoring support
- Carry out structural appraisals and feasibility studies, presenting innovative, sustainable solutions with a focus on reuse and low embodied carbon
- L iaise directly with clients, architects, contractors, and stakeholders to develop design strategies and resolve technical issues
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables while ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations and sustainability criteria
- Attend site visits and project meetings, contributing to progress reports and ensuring practical, buildable solutions
- Support business development activities including client engagement and identifying new project opportunities
Skills and Experience
- Minimum 2:1 degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)
- Ability to perform in depth surveys and produce detailed reports essential
- Chartered or actively working towards chartership with IStructE or ICE
- Considerable relevant experience in a UK-based consultancy
- Proven experience in historic and conservation projects
- Confident in the design of timber, masonry, steel and concrete to British Standards or Eurocodes
- Experience managing projects and supervising junior team members
- Strong report writing skills and experience conducting structural surveys across residential and commercial sites
- Good knowledge of structural analysis and design software
- Able to write fee proposals and manage project budgets
- Excellent attention to detail and high standard of accuracy in technical work
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a client-focused approach
- Self-motivated, proactive and capable of working independently
- Full UK driving licence and access to own transport preferred
