Our Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Marine Engineer Technical Consultant and Surveyor for our Thermal SciencesPractice in our London, UK office. In this role, you will work as part of a team to carry out high-level forensic technical investigations principally focussed on litigious marine disputes. The role will be focussed on the London market and based in central London, with a view to providing evidence as an expert witness, after having gained suitable experience. The role will be physically demanding and requires worldwide travel. In addition, it will include both site attendance and the compilation of detailed technical written reports.
You will be responsible for
- Providing guidance and expert advice to superintendents and senior ship officers following marine casualties.
- Conducting onboard surveys and, where access is not possible, completing assessments based on documentary evidence.
- Responding to client-driven work demands, which may include short-notice travel and working to tight deadlines.
- Advising clients on the technical aspects of marine cases, including setting and managing realistic expectations.
- Leading business development initiatives to drive growth and expand market presence.
- Working independently with a high level of efficiency, while also collaborating effectively as part of a team on complex assignments.
- Meeting with clients to discuss case reports and technical findings and presenting your conclusions clearly and confidently.
- Representing a wide range of clients, including Owners, Charterers, Shipyards, P&I Clubs, Underwriters, and legal counsel.
- Effectively managing conflicts and engaging constructively with challenging stakeholders during meetings.
- Demonstrating excellent written and verbal communication skills through clear, concise reports, correspondence, and client interactions.
- Operating from our London office or remotely from home, with the flexibility to attend the London office regularly for client meetings and team collaboration.
- Managing your workload independently while contributing positively to the wider team environment.
You will have the following skills and qualifications
- B.Eng Degree in relevant subject
- Class I Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency with no restrictions
- Experience in senior seagoing ranks
- Experience of low-speed engines
- Strong understanding of Marine Surveying and Marine Consultancy
- Preferred cargo or tanker ship types and deep-sea experience
- Familiar with current technical regulations for ships
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
- High level of accuracy
- Drive and motivation towards career progression
- Aptitude for forensic investigation and problem solving
- Flexibility to travel worldwide at short notice
