As part of our continued support to a major automotive client, we are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Project Design Engineer - Powertrain to join a dynamic team and deliver critical systems into high-performance vehicle programmes. This inside IR35 contract will be offered for an initial six-months and located at our client’s site in Surrey.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical delivery of powertrain systems from concept through to production, including: Cooling, Exhaust and Insulation, Air Intake Systems.
  • Author/manage technical specifications, FMEAs, DVPs, and test plans.
  • Support prototype and series vehicle builds and testing activities.
  • Contribute to key project reviews and technical status meetings.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to meet design, cost, and delivery targets.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders including logistics, purchasing, and programme teams.
  • Identify and mitigate risks, track engineering concerns, and drive robust resolutions.
  • Prepare and deliver documentation for internal and customer milestone reviews.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline (2:1 or above or equivalent).

Essential skills

  • Extensive background in automotive powertrain engineering.
  • Strong expertise in powertrain system design, development, and validation.
  • Proven track record delivering driveline, transmission, and engine components.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of APQP and related processes.
  • Proficient in DFM, DFMEA, risk analysis, and root cause resolution methodologies.
  • Proficient in CATIA V5.

Desired skills

  • Background in relevant Powertrain attributes.
  • Knowledge of 8D or PPS problem-solving methodologies.
  • Supplier management experience to ensure cost, quality, and timing targets are met.

Experience

  • Solid background in automotive Powertrain engineering.
  • Experience across design, development, validation, and delivery phases.
  • Demonstrated success in project and supplier management within APQP or equivalent frameworks.
  • Strong record of on-time delivery and resolving engineering challenges.
  • Hands-on experience collaborating with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.
  • Experience in OEM or Tier 1 component delivery.
