Overview
The Data & MI Business Analyst acts as a bridge between business stakeholders, data teams and technology delivery teams, using strong business analysis and consultancy skills to understand how data is created, managed, transformed, reported and consumed across the organisation.
The role is responsible for understanding business processes and information needs, identifying data-related issues and opportunities, and translating business requirements into actionable data, reporting, analytics and information management solutions.
Working across business and technical teams, the Data Business Analyst will help improve data quality, governance, consistency and usability, supporting the delivery of data products, management information (MI), reporting, dashboards and insights that enable effective business decision-making.
The role will also identify inefficiencies, data duplication, gaps in data ownership and opportunities to simplify or improve data flows, interfaces and reporting processes.
The successful candidate will combine strong core Business Analysis and consultancy capability with practical experience of working with data, reporting and information management in an Agile delivery environment.
Responsibilities
- Business Analysis & Consultancy
- Work closely with business stakeholders, data engineers, analytics teams and product owners to define data solutions.
- Gather, document and prioritise business requirements for data, MI reporting and analytics initiatives.
- Analyse business processes, requirements and assumptions to identify opportunities for data automation, standardisation and improved reporting.
- Translate complex business and data requirements into clear, actionable outcomes for data and technology teams.
- Help establish a common understanding of critical business data and its meaning across different business areas.
- Data Analysis, Governance & Quality
- Analyse how data is captured, processed, stored, transformed and consumed across business processes and systems.
- Identify data quality issues, inconsistencies, duplication, gaps and opportunities for improvement.
- Define and document data ownership, stewardship and accountability requirements where appropriate.
- Develop and maintain business data dictionaries, data definitions, terminology and agreed business rules.
- Define and document data mappings, business rules, KPIs and data definitions.
- Support the design and implementation of data warehouse, reporting and BI solutions.
- Ensure governance, data quality and business requirements are considered throughout delivery.
- Data Flows, Interfaces & Migration
- Analyse and document data flows between business processes, applications, databases, reporting platforms and external interfaces.
- Identify dependencies, hand-offs, manual interventions and inefficiencies within existing data flows.
- Support the definition of requirements for data interfaces, integrations and data exchanges between systems.
- Identify opportunities to simplify, automate or improve data flows and information processing.
- Define data mappings and transformation requirements for data integration and migration initiatives.
- Support data migration activities including data profiling, mapping, cleansing, transformation, validation and reconciliation.
- MI, Reporting & Analytics
- Understand business management information requirements and translate them into clear data and reporting specifications.
- Define requirements for management information, operational reporting, dashboards and analytical products.
- Identify inconsistencies between existing reports and sources of data, helping establish trusted and agreed sources of information.
- Analyse existing reporting to identify duplication, manual effort, inefficiencies and opportunities for rationalisation.
- Support the development and enhancement of dashboards, reports and data visualisations using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Qlik or similar.
- Support the development of self-service reporting and analytics capabilities by ensuring users have access to appropriate, trusted and well-defined data.
- Work with data and analytics teams to validate that reporting outputs meet business requirements and provide meaningful insight.
- Agile Delivery & Testing
- Work effectively within Agile delivery teams, contributing to refinement, planning, prioritisation and delivery activities.
- Create clear user stories, acceptance criteria and other requirements artefacts appropriate to the delivery approach.
- Collaborate with Product Owners and delivery teams to ensure data requirements are understood and appropriately prioritised.
- Support data validation, functional testing, system integration testing and User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
- Define test scenarios and acceptance criteria for data, reporting, migration and integration requirements.
- Validate data outputs against agreed business rules, definitions and expected results.
- Support the investigation and resolution of defects, data quality issues and discrepancies.
Essential skills
- Proven Business Analyst experience within a Data, Analytics, BI or Reporting environment.
- Strong core Business Analysis and consultancy skills, including requirements elicitation, analysis, facilitation, stakeholder management and problem solving.
- Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts including data models, data structures, data flows and data lineage.
- Experience analysing data issues and identifying data quality problems, duplication, inconsistencies and gaps.
- Knowledge of ETL/data preparation processes and tools.
- Experience translating business requirements into technical specifications.
- Understanding of Agile delivery methodologies and user story creation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong stakeholder management and Ability to communicate complex data concepts in simple business language.
- Experience documenting and analysing data flows, interfaces and system dependencies.
- Understanding of data migration, data mapping, data transformation and data validation activities.

- Experience working within a Data & Analytics Centre of Excellence (Co E).
- Exposure to cloud data platforms such as Snowflake
- Knowledge of data governance, master data and data quality frameworks.

- Experience developing or maintaining business data dictionaries and data catalogues.
- Experience working with data warehouses, data lakes or modern data platforms.
