We are seeking an Embedded Senior Systems Engineer with MBSE experience to work with a leading European developer and manufacturer of solid rocket propulsion systems, supporting advanced defence and aerospace programmes. The Model Based Systems Engineer position offers an exciting opportunity to establish and develop systems engineering and requirements management processes, driving the adoption of best practice frameworks, ALM tools, and end-to-end traceability across complex rocket motor development programmes. The role sits at the heart of engineering delivery, helping to ensure that customer needs are translated into robust, verifiable, and well-managed system requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Develop, deploy, and maintain requirements management and systems engineering methodologies, aligned with recognised frameworks such as NASA Systems Engineering Handbook, INCOSE, ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, and ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148, tailored to organisational needs.
- Own, configure, and administer ALM/requirements management tools, including requirements definition, refinement, derivation, architecture management, traceability, baselining, and change control.
- Develop and maintain project architectures within ALM platforms such as Codebeamer, ensuring alignment with systems engineering processes and lifecycle activities.
- Design, manage, and maintain requirements architectures, ensuring complete bidirectional traceability between customer needs, system requirements, physical components, verification activities, and delivered products.
- Support and champion the adoption of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices, tools, and artefacts across engineering teams and customer programmes.
- Create and maintain SysML/UML models, views, functional architectures, and interaction diagrams to support system definition and communication.
- Support systems engineering activities across the full V-Model lifecycle, from concept definition and requirements capture through design, integration, verification, validation, certification, and in-service support.
- Perform requirements management activities including creation, analysis, review, validation, verification, proving, and supplier integration.
- Conduct requirements and use case analysis, concept assessment, trade studies, system architecture design, functional modelling, performance assessment, and system behaviour analysis.
- Produce high-quality technical documentation, engineering reports, specifications, requirements documentation, and supporting lifecycle artefacts.
- Support systems integration, verification, validation, proving, certification, and management of non-conformances.
- Assist with project planning, work package management, engineering reviews, stakeholder engagement, and coordination with customer and engineering management teams.
- Develop systems engineering capability within the wider organisation through mentoring, training, process development, worked examples, and best-practice guidance.
- Perform any other duties necessary, as requested by the business to carry out job function.
Qualifications
- A formal qualification (degree or equivalent) in systems, aerospace, mechanical or related engineering discipline.
- Professional membership / Chartered Engineer (CEng) of a relevant institute e.g., Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Royal Aeronautical Society, Institute of Explosive Engineers etc.
Essential skills
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, including ConOps, requirements engineering, interface management, system architecture, trade studies, verification and validation, systems integration, and lifecycle management.
- Ability to develop and manage system architectures, technical requirement specifications, requirements verification, validation, proving, and traceability.
- Knowledge of verification, validation, testing, certification, and safety-critical product development practices.
- Strong technical documentation, report writing, and communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to assimilate information from multiple engineering disciplines, solve complex technical problems, and maintain a high level of attention to detail.
- Proven project and work package management skills, including planning, prioritisation, stakeholder engagement, and delivering results to agreed timescales.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong interpersonal skills, positive work ethic, self-motivation, and the ability to build effective relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
Experience
- Experience in an engineering team environment developing products to meet customer requirements.
- Experience applying the Systems Engineering V-Model throughout the complete product development lifecycle.
- Experience with requirements and ALM/PLM tools such as IBM DOORS, Codebeamer, Polarion, Jama Connect, JIRA, and related engineering lifecycle platforms.
- Experience conducting requirements analysis, use case development, functional modelling, performance analysis, and design trade studies.
- Experience working within regulated engineering environments and familiarity with standards.
- Practical experience with MBSE methodologies and tools, including SysML modelling, UML, IBM Rhapsody, and Enterprise Architect (Sparx EA).
- Experience using Codebeamer as a requirements management tool.
- Experience writing and refining requirements in a safety critical aerospace environment.
- Full product lifecycle experience – taking single product from concept to production (on the systems side of development).
