Stirling Dynamics is recruiting for Senior/Principal Modelling and Simulation Contractors. Due to upcoming projects and continued growth, Stirling Dynamics are looking for multiple experienced Modelling and Simulation Contractors to support with a current project within the Marine Business Unit delivering into both commercial and defence environments. The Simulation, Dynamics and Control capability provides expertise to both internal and external customers in all areas of analysis but the below are particularly relevant for the role we are looking to recruit:

  • Control
  • System performance
  • Equipment modelling
  • Vehicle dynamics

Modelling, simulation, dynamics, and control has always been at the core of Stirling Dynamics' capabilities, and we have been at the forefront of developing modelling techniques and model-based design activities for over 30 years. Modelling has never been more important for engineering design, with requirements for reverse engineering, root cause analysis and real time models. As a business, Stirling Dynamics work across a wide variety of projects from significant modifications on civil and military aircraft; development projects for large aerospace OEMs; concepts and feasibility studies for the emerging eVTOL industry; controller actuation development for simulator and flight worthy products and control and automation covering submarine autopilots and flight control laws. The successful contractor will be predominantly based in our Bristol office, although they can work remotely part of the time. The contract will initially be for 6 months with options for further work beyond this.

Responsibilities

The contractor would work on producing models at vehicle and system level representing plant and control algorithms. The Mathworks toolset is used heavily including Simulink and associated toolboxes, and so a good understanding of the use of version control software (e.g. GIT) and task management toolsets is required. Candidates will have the following responsibilities (depending on experience):

  • Developing task definition (together with the technical lead)
  • Defining model and control algorithm requirements
  • Build and test of models
  • Peer review of models
  • Preparation and presentation of results, models etc to customers
  • Formal verification procedures
  • Authoring model documentation

Qualifications

Candidates will ideally be degree qualified (or equivalent) in a related discipline (preferably Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering Mathematics, Physics, or similar).

Essential skills

  • Matlab/Simulink
  • Hydro-actuated systems
  • Electro-mechanical actuated systems
  • Multi-body simulation
  • Vehicle dynamics
  • Systems engineering

Desired skills

  • Application within the Marine sector
  • Advanced control theory, such as Kalman filters, and state estimation
  • Real time models
  • Code generation
  • C/C++
  • Flexible, can-do approach
  • Ability to deal with multiple conflicting requests
  • Professional attitude
  • Self-motivated to see tasks through to successful completion
  • Strong time management and organisational skills

Experience

The candidate is expected to have industrial engineering experience, using modelling for the development and analysis of complex systems. We are particularly interested in individuals with a background in ANY of the following disciplines:

  • Hydro-actuated systems
  • Electro-mechanical actuated systems
  • Multi-body simulation
  • Vehicle dynamics
  • Systems engineering
  • Flight controls
  • Dynamic loads
  • Real time models
  • Motor control
  • Vehicle control
  • Actuation systems
  • ARP4754
  • DO178
  • DO331

What do I need before I apply

Due to security restrictions on the projects, we can only consider UK nationals for this role.

Benefits

A competitive rate will be agreed based on the contractor's experience.
