Expleo is a leading Global Engineering Services Provider with UK presence in 10 locations. We are seeking an experienced EMC Engineer to support our client at their Belfast facility. In this role, the successful candidate will contribute to the design and development of state‑of‑the‑art complex defence systems, including guided‑weapon and energetic‑safety programmes, ensuring robust performance in demanding operational environments. The position supports the full engineering lifecycle, from requirements development through verification, including analysis, test planning and compliance activities. It offers an excellent opportunity for an EMC Engineer to deepen their technical capability, broaden their understanding of complex electronic systems and contribute to the delivery of high‑integrity products within a highly regulated environment.

We are seeking an energetic and driven individual with a strong background in EMC engineering and a solid understanding of complex electronic systems. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in defence, aerospace or other highly regulated industries, where rigorous compliance and verification processes are essential. This role offers the chance to work with a blue‑chip client on technology that contributes directly to the security of the UK and its allies. Valued attributes include being a team player who uses their initiative, demonstrates a passion for engineering, and applies a thorough, methodical approach with strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Perform EMC activities within the Electronics team, optimising designs through trade‑offs, studies, and analysis to ensure best‑in‑class product performance.
  • Develop and maintain EMC requirements, and review internal and external specifications for compliance and completeness.
  • Produce EMC test plans aligned with project, regulatory, and customer requirements.
  • Liaise with external EMC test houses, including obtaining quotations, defining test scope, and coordinating test campaigns.
  • Support CE marking activities, including conducting EMC Directive risk assessments and ensuring documentation readiness.
  • Perform EMC pre‑compliance testing to de‑risk formal qualification campaigns.
  • Conduct read‑across assessments and gap analyses to determine applicability of existing evidence to new designs or variants.
  • Carry out HERO, HERP, and HERF assessments and support associated trials.
  • Support and participate in EMC and HERO test campaigns, including on‑site technical assistance.
  • Produce high‑quality test reports, verification records, and supporting documentation.
  • Contribute to wider electronics engineering tasks as required, supporting cross‑functional design and development activities.
  • Complete all mandatory Thales training and adhere to internal engineering governance processes.

Qualifications

  • Degree level qualification in Electronics, Electrical Engineering (or a related discipline). A lower qualification would be acceptable for example HNC/HND should the candidate be able to demonstrate significant demonstrable relevant experience in lieu.

Essential skills

  • Strong understanding of EMC principles, including emissions, immunity, coupling mechanisms, and mitigation techniques.
  • Ability to interpret and apply EMC standards, regulations, and customer specifications (e.g., CE marking, EMC Directive).
  • Competence in writing technical documentation such as requirements, test plans, and verification reports.
  • Hands‑on experience performing EMC pre‑compliance testing using relevant test equipment (spectrum analysers, LISNs, GTEMs, transient generators, etc.).
  • Ability to conduct structured analyses, including read‑across assessments, gap analyses, and risk assessments.
  • Experience supporting external EMC test campaigns and liaising with accredited test houses.
  • Familiarity with HERO, HERP, and HERF principles and the ability to support associated assessments and trials.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to propose practical, evidence‑based design improvements.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • High level of attention to detail and disciplined approach to documentation, configuration control, and verification traceability.
  • Ability to work independently, manage workload, and deliver high‑quality outputs within project timescales.

Desired skills

  • Knowledge of military or aerospace EMC standards such as DEF STAN, MIL‑STD‑461 or RTCA DO‑160.
  • Understanding of electronic design principles including grounding, shielding and PCB layout impacts on EMC performance.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering practices including requirements management and verification traceability.
  • Ability to provide EMC‑focused input during design reviews and technical discussions.
  • Awareness of wider compliance domains such as Low Voltage Directive, RoHS and safety‑related directives.
  • Competence using modelling or simulation tools to support EMC analysis and design optimisation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with external suppliers, partners and accredited test houses during design and certification activities.
  • Understanding of HERO, HERP and HERF considerations within complex defence systems.

Experience

  • Experience working in an EMC‑focused engineering role within electronics, defence, aerospace or a similarly regulated environment.
  • Experience producing EMC documentation including requirements, test plans and verification evidence.
  • Experience performing EMC pre‑compliance testing using industry‑standard test equipment.
  • Experience supporting external EMC test campaigns and interacting with accredited test houses.
  • Experience conducting structured technical assessments such as EMC risk assessments, read‑across studies and gap analyses.
  • Experience contributing to CE marking activities or compliance with the EMC Directive.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams on complex electronic systems.
  • Experience preparing technical reports and maintaining accurate configuration‑controlled documentation.
