This role is a key position within the Software Development organisation, working closely with Software Development Principal Engineers responsible for control systems across multiple functional domains. The role holder will be accountable for defining, maintaining, and delivering robust software development plans across multiple platforms and vehicle programmes.
The position requires strong programme leadership, cross-functional coordination, and a deep understanding of automotive software development to ensure timely, high-quality delivery in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
Responsibilities- Define and own software development plans across multiple domains, platforms, and vehicle programmes.
- Work closely with Technical Programme Managers (TPMs) to establish platform content and priorities, balancing bottom-up inputs from engineering teams with top-down programme requirements.
- Collaborate with Software Development Principal Engineers to estimate effort, define delivery schedules, and secure commitment from all stakeholders.
- Identify, manage, and communicate programme critical paths, dependencies, and potential blockers, escalating where management support is required.
- Proactively manage risks, particularly those crossing functional, domain, or organisational boundaries.
- Monitor software development progress, integration status, and defect resolution using JIRA and other tracking tools.
- Produce clear metrics, KPIs, and performance indicators to demonstrate project status, progress, and risks.
- Report programme status and risks on a weekly basis, tailoring communication appropriately for Director-level stakeholders and delivery teams.
- Manage interdependencies between teams and programmes, removing or mitigating impediments to maintain delivery momentum.
- Support programme and domain teams to ensure sprint planning aligns with long-term platform and business objectives.
- Lead and coordinate integration activities across programmes, ensuring seamless delivery of software to the wider business.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (preferably First Class or Upper Second Class) in Software Engineering, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional project management certifications (e.g. CSM, APM, PMI, PRINCE2) are desirable but not essential.
- Strong understanding of the automotive software development lifecycle and associated challenges.
- Solid knowledge of recognised project management methodologies, including Agile, Lean, and Waterfall.
- Experience using JIRA (or equivalent tools) for software project planning, tracking, and reporting.
- Ability to apply structured risk management principles effectively.
- Strong analytical and organisational skills, with the ability to manage complex plans and interdependencies.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Project.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present clearly to both technical and senior management audiences.
- Technical understanding of model-based development, ideally involving Simulink control systems and AUTOSAR basic software.
- Experience working within ASPICE-assessed programmes.
- Exposure to integration-heavy software environments involving multiple platforms or vehicle programmes.
- Familiarity with continuous improvement approaches and process optimisation in software delivery.
- Demonstrable experience delivering a full product lifecycle within automotive software development, ideally operating within an ASPICE-compliant environment.
- Proven track record of on-time delivery in high-pressure, deadline-driven environments.
- Experience leading software or systems programmes using Agile methodologies within multi-disciplinary and diverse engineering teams.
- Experience working with distributed and global engineering teams across multiple locations and time zones.
- Background working within a small or medium-sized business is preferred, though not essential.
