An exciting opportunity has arisen for a HiL Development & Test Engineer to support the development, integration, and validation of advanced automotive systems within a cutting-edge Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL/XiL) environment. This role focuses on the design, configuration, delivery, and maintenance of real-time XiL test environments ranging from single ECU setups through to complex multi-ECU architectures incorporating up to 30 ECUs in the loop. The successful candidate will contribute to the validation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Advanced Automated Driving (AAD) features through both signal-based and scenario-based testing methodologies. Working within a highly collaborative engineering environment, the engineer will support the delivery of state-of-the-art real-time simulation platforms, ensuring compliance with modern automotive testing and safety standards including ASAM OpenX and ISO 26262.

Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, develop, and maintain Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL/XiL) test systems for automotive electronic and software validation.
  • Support XiL environments of varying complexity, from standalone ECU validation through to large-scale multi-ECU system integration.
  • Configure and integrate dSPACE SCALEXIO-based HiL systems for closed-loop testing applications.
  • Develop and maintain simulation environments for signal-based and scenario-based validation activities.
  • Configure communication networks, bus systems, and ECU interfaces for integrated testing environments.

Test Automation & Scenario-Based Validation

  • Develop automation frameworks to support repeatable and scalable HiL testing workflows.
  • Implement and execute scenario-based validation strategies for ADAS/AAD systems.
  • Integrate driving simulation tools and synchronised scenario execution across simulation and hardware platforms.
  • Support deterministic and real-time execution of automated test cases.
  • Develop and maintain automated test scripts and validation sequences using industry-standard toolchains.

Modelling & Simulation

  • Develop and maintain MATLAB/Simulink models for dSPACE-based systems and communication simulation.
  • Simulate CAN and Automotive Ethernet communication within model-based development environments.
  • Support model integration, validation, and correlation activities across simulation and physical systems.
  • Contribute to development of bespoke simulation capabilities and validation methodologies.

Network & Communication Configuration

  • Configure and manage CAN and Automotive Ethernet communication architectures.
  • Perform signal mapping, PDU configuration, and network communication flow analysis.
  • Utilise dSPACE Bus Manager and Ethernet Configuration Tool for signal routing, bus configuration, workflow management, PDU setup, and communication validation.
  • Support troubleshooting and debugging of network and communication issues within HiL environments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in software engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Automotive Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in automation development, HiL systems, or automotive testing environments.
  • Strong understanding of automotive embedded systems and validation processes.

Communication Protocols

  • Strong knowledge of CAN and Automotive Ethernet.
  • Experience with signal mapping, PDU structures, and network communication flows.

HiL Systems & Toolchain

  • Hands-on experience with dSPACE SCALEXIO, ConfigurationDesk, and dSPACE AutomationDesk.
  • Understanding of complete HiL workflows from system setup through to automated validation.

Bus Configuration & Network Tools

  • Experience using dSPACE Bus Manager, Ethernet Configuration Tool, Vector CANoe/ CANape.
  • Ability to configure, simulate, monitor, and troubleshoot communication networks and ECUs.

Automation & Software Skills

  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, CAPL, and ECU-Test.
  • Strong understanding of test automation principles and frameworks.

Modelling & Simulation

  • MATLAB/Simulink modelling for dSPACE and automotive systems.
  • Familiarity with NV DriveSim, dSPACE ASM, IPG CarMaker or equivalent simulation platforms.

Desired Skills

  • ISO 26262 functional safety processes.
  • ASAM OpenX standards.
  • Deterministic real-time systems.
  • Familiarity with cloud-connected or distributed simulation environments.
  • Understanding of automotive software lifecycle and CI/CD practices.

Experience

  • Proven experience in HiL/XiL development and automotive system validation.
  • Experience supporting ADAS, AAD, or autonomous driving feature validation.
  • Experience working with multi-ECU automotive architectures and real-time embedded systems.
  • Practical experience developing and maintaining automated validation environments.
  • Exposure to MBD workflows and simulation-based verification.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving system integration and communication issues within automotive test environments.
  • Experience working within Agile or structured automotive development processes.
  • Time synchronization across hardware and simulation platforms.
  • Closed-loop ADAS/AAD validation systems.
  • Sensor simulation and perception system validation.
  • Experience contributing to development of reusable validation frameworks and scalable test architectures.
