Are you a hands-on engineering expert with real-world experience in materials forming? We’re looking for a specialist who will be responsible for coordination and delivery of materials characterisation and data analysis, completion of press shop trial activities to support our material approval process and support of material-related quality concern resolution and prevention. It is critical that you can maintain the link between engineering, supply base and our manufacturing facilities, driving to not only deliver, but to improve our standards & processes in a passionate and collaborative manner.

Responsibilities

  • Coordination, delivery, assessment and reporting of press trials to assess new materials against formability criteria and qualify them for use within JLR Press Shops.
  • Deliver raw material related cost-reduction projects.
  • Contribute to standardising material testing equipment and procedures across supply base and within our Press Shops.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of material related process standards.
  • Support the timely delivery of material for Try-Out and Production Ramp-up for all new Model Programmes.
  • Monitoring non-processed scrap rates and supporting activities to minimise ‘avoidable’ scrap and to maximise the value to JLR of the related processed scrap.
  • Working within the safety parameters to ensure the safety of the individual & colleagues.
  • Benchmark OEMs to understand what they are doing in the same areas of business.
  • Deliver both the functional and departmental KPI’s to achieve key scorecard metrics with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Analysis and reporting of key data for the area and development of reports.

Qualifications

  • Degree, apprenticeship, or equivalent experience in part quality & measurement.

Essential Skills

  • A recognised engineering apprenticeship, degree level or equivalent experience in sheet metal forming.
  • Experience of coordinating and carrying out press trial activities, including the organisation of quality assessment activities and ability to apply appropriate control of engineering change.
  • Understanding of materials, and material properties and processes specifically relating to forming technologies.
  • Experience carrying out root cause analysis activities, identifying corrective actions and delivering process improvements.
  • Great level of presentation skills at all levels.
  • An ability to communicate to colleagues at all levels of the business.
  • Good MS Office suite: Word, PowerPoint and Excel and experience of Microsoft O365 tools.
  • Driving licence and ability to travel extensively between sites.
  • Flexibility – whilst plant based, candidates would be expected to be mobile with regular travel to Gaydon and to other Press Shops, as well as occasional overseas travel.

Desired Skills

  • A working knowledge of steel and aluminium manufacturing (e.g. blast furnaces, cast houses, rolling mills, heat treatment lines, cut to length and blanking lines, destackers, reoilers, etc).
  • Previous die manufacturing and buy off experience.
  • Previous press operational experience and problem solving for quality concerns (dimensional, formability and cosmetic).
