Lead Software Engineer Angular and PHP

Location: UK, hybrid working. ( Near Nottingham is preferred) Office attendance requirements to be confirmed.

Experis is recruiting a Lead Software Engineer for a global software business, working across three products within its portfolio.

You'll combine hands on engineering with leading a small team, helping shape technical decisions, improve software quality and deliver features.

Around 60 to 70% of your time will focus on technical work, with the remainder covering team leadership, reviews and removing blockers.

The team already uses AI coding agents extensively.

You'll help turn business requirements into clear specifications, direct agents, review their output and validate the resulting software.

Strong engineering judgement and automated testing experience are central to the role.

  • What you'll be doing
  • Leading delivery across three products, adapting to changing business priorities.
  • Working primarily with Angular and PHP, with React Native used for mobile applications.
  • Reviewing code, challenging technical decisions and maintaining engineering standards.
  • Ensuring features include appropriate automated test coverage.
  • Leading and developing a team expected to comprise approximately three engineers.
  • Running regular one to ones, supporting development and managing performance.
  • Working with Product to clarify requirements, agree priorities and plan delivery.
  • Improving the team's AI tooling, reusable agent skills and quality checks.
  • Your first few months will focus on understanding the products, getting familiar with the existing AI tools and development processes, and improving automated test coverage.

You'll then take increasing ownership of features, technical decisions and team delivery.

What we're looking for

  • Strong software engineering experience, ideally across both Angular and PHP.
  • Previous technical leadership experience, including supporting and developing engineers.
  • The technical depth to review code, identify weaknesses and make sound architectural decisions.
  • Strong knowledge of automated testing and responsibility for software quality.
  • Practical enthusiasm for AI assisted engineering, with the judgement to challenge and validate its output.
  • Clear communication and a collaborative, approachable leadership style.
  • Confidence moving between products, technologies and competing priorities.
  • React Native experience would be useful, although there is scope to learn it if your engineering foundations are strong.
  • You’ll collaborate regularly with US colleagues within normal UK working hours. Occasional US travel may be available, but it is not a requirement.
  • The interview process is expected to include a technical discussion with engineering peers, followed by a meeting with the hiring manager.

How to prepare for a job interview at Experis

✨Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

✨Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Experis uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

✨Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

✨Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
