Role: Deputy Director – Credit Risk / Portfolio Management
Location: Southwest – with national travel requirements when required
Contract: 6 months (with likely extension)
Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer, you will lead the Credit and Portfolio functions for a government body. Your role will ensure compliance with policies, adherence to best practices in responsible lending, and a strong commitment to fair customer treatment.
As part of the Finance management team within the products and services function, you will play a key role in shaping policy and funding discussions with both internal and external stakeholders, including government representatives and the wider public. Additionally, you will contribute to strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Lead a team of credit, investment, and debt portfolio specialists to manage a high-risk SME loan portfolio with structured finance controls.
- Oversee credit, investment, and arrears decisions within delegated authority, ensuring responsible lending practices.
- Support the Heads of Credit and Portfolio in standardizing the agency’s approach to lending and debt management, aligned with FCA framework.
- Act as the technical expert in credit and portfolio management, contributing to risk, assurance, and governance strategies.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to drive product-led, customer-focused strategy.
- Build strong relationships with key stakeholders.
- Represent the agency in public and government forums, providing thought leadership and expert insight.
- Serve as an executive member of the Credit Committee, contributing to strategic lending decisions.
Essential skills and qualifications
- Experience in lending or investment decision-making within finance.
- Degree or relevant qualification.
- Strong portfolio management and leadership experience.
- Expertise in policy initiatives, Subsidy Control regulations, and public finance.
- Proven success in launching large-scale financial products.
- Track record of helping UK SMEs grow through finance solutions.
- Knowledge of IFRS9 fair value accounting and loan benchmarking.
- Client-facing experience, managing expectations, and credit decisions.
