Role Summary
Our client is seeking DV cleared Backend Developers to support high impact Defence and Security programmes. You will design, build and operate secure, cloud-native backend services that underpin mission-critical national systems. This is a hands-on engineering role, focused on building robust APIs, services and data-driven components within modern cloud and DevSecOps environments. You will work end to end - from shaping technical designs and delivering features through to improving reliability, resilience and performance in live operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build backend services and APIs, delivering features end-to-end in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Develop cloud-native and containerised applications using technologies such as Java (Spring Boot), Python (FastAPI), Node.js and modern datastores.
- Build solutions within an Agile and DevSecOps environment, embedding security and quality throughout the delivery lifecycle.
- Integrate backend services into CI/CD pipelines, supporting automated testing and deployment.
- Ensure systems are reliable, resilient and scalable, applying Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles.
- Collaborate closely with frontend developers, architects, DevOps engineers and client stakeholders.
- Help clients and users understand technical trade-offs and make informed product decisions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and engineering best practice across teams.
Required Skills & Experience
- DV security clearance is essential.
- Proven experience as a backend or software engineer delivering production systems.
- Strong coding ability in Java, Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Solid understanding of backend engineering fundamentals, design patterns and API design.
- Experience working in Agile teams (e.g. Scrum, Kanban).
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
- Cloud & Engineering Experience building backend services on cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
- Familiarity with microservices and containerisation.
- Experience with DevSecOps tooling (e.g. GitLab, Jenkins, Atlassian).
- Understanding of security best practices and OWASP principles.
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, Oracle, MongoDB) is beneficial.
